Brooks Professional; used but recently recovered, using wide copper rivets. Finish is a combination of Fiebing brown dye, Fiebing Resolene and fluorochemical acrylic (for enhanced water and stain resistance). As pictured - $65

Please explain "Brooks B-17; black, used, with laces. As pictured - $55"

I'd sort of like to try a Brooks and now have a vintage bike that it might suit.

The laces keep the leather from sagging excessively in the middle. Basic idea is to tie a shoelace through the holes on the bottom of the saddle to keep them from spreading apart.

No, and no.

Having said that, though - It's a used Brooks B-17 standard. All normal caveats apply. The saddle has been broken in a bit, because it was ridden occasionally. Given a little time, it should conform to another user.

The leather's still stiff and strong. Likely the collagen fibers are still mostly intact. The tensioning bolt is currently at zero. The saddle has been protected from the elements, using Sno-Seal beeswax and (occasionally) Proofide. There is light surface cracking on the top finish, which is normal for these saddles. There are no tears. Degraded leather usually presents as dry, brittle and easily torn.

The laces were installed because I like my saddles a little stiffer and I didn't want the side tabs rubbing against my thighs. I am also used to Brooks Professional model saddles, which are a crap-ton stiffer than the B-17.

This particular saddle is only surplus because I'm selling the bike that it was on, and the new rider is not a fan of leather saddles.

By the way - Brooks actually installs lace holes into certain models of the B-17 (particularly the pre-softened and aged models) for exactly the same reasons.

If you're really worried about the saddle giving up on you prematurely, you might want to purchase a brand new B-17 and go through the break-in process from ground zero.

The Dia Compe 500 brakes are missing one of the two quick-release barrel mounts. Other than that they're both in pretty good shape.

No, it wasn't that I was worried but I just didn't know. I have read (probably here) about doing something similar to what you're describing but in order to repair or renew a Brooks saddle, I did not mean to be offensive in any way. with my questions. I would like to try a leather saddle and this seems to be a good price but I have jumped on bargains in the past before understanding some key points about a product.

Once again, I meant no offense with my questions.

No offense was taken. I was mainly concerned with your position as the buyer - e.g. you have to be comfortable with what you buy. New Brooks saddles come with a warranty and guarantees, and if they don't work for you, someone else will want them (here, on Craigslist or eBay). I can't really offer those things on a used saddle, so in that case it made more sense to me to steer you in a direction I've gone myself.
