Hi All!

I'm building up a bike for my wife, looking for a steel 47-49cm frame and fork. Something medium to high end, Columbus SL, Tange Prestige, etc. Ideally paint in good condition, lighter colors preferred, ie white, blue, pink, purple, etc.

Yep I’ve been keeping an eye on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace as well as ebay of course, tough finding good ones in that size though! So I’m expanding my search. Any other forums I should look at?

I have the right bike but it may be a little while before I can get around to boxing it up because of work commitments. Are you looking for a complete bike or a frame? I was thinking of selling this as a frame (and I most likely will want to keep the wheels). It is a Gangl custom frame. It's a beautiful bike and in remarkably nice shape. It is shimano 600 throughout except the headset and hubs both of which are campagnolo nuovo record. Gangl is still in business and is a very well respected frame builder.

Post 5 has my bike. It has campy drop outs, eyelets, and lots of really nice custom touches throughout the frame. I was going to put it up for sale this summer after I stripped it down to frame/fork as time is tight right now.

Ohh that’s a great looking bike, and exactly the kind of thing I’m looking for, unfortunately it got the thumbs down for the color. She’s a graphic designer so the color has to be just right.

I might have to go the custom painting route, if I don’t find The One in another couple of months, although that would definitely put me over budget, haha.

Would you be interested in a newer frame, like this? This is a 2009 Fuji, and 50cm but has the sloping top tube. I am in Davis also.

Oh interesting, that’s a nice one, I hadn’t really been looking at modern bikes, never really liked the look of Surly, etc, but there’s probably some I’ve overlooked.

I think it might be a bit big, how tall are you?

5'4'' - this frame feels a little smaller to me but please check the geometry in the link.

Hmm, she's 5'3", so it might have fit, unfortunately it didn't pique her interest. I think I'm slowly narrowing it down by process of elimination-the highest rated bike I've shown her was a Zunow Belladona with a truly weird paint scheme, haha.

You might want to look at the nice little red and chrome Windsor that @AZORCH has listed on the last page of the "The Frame Doesn't Fit..." thread. It looks like it might be in the size range you're seeking.

They make beautiful frames and that one is in great condition. It was actually relisted today I believe, though I don't think they lowered the price.

KtotheF I know you asked about a steel frame. I have a Trek 1400 ( looks like 1996) in 47. this is an aluminum frame. it is knocking around the garage, and has been for years, so there are paint chips. I dont have pics, but can take some if interested. Trek calls the color fire red, but I always thought it was more of a root beer. the catalog picture is pretty spot on color wise, at least on my monitor in comparison to my memory! here is a catalog picture of the bike...let me know if interested. yours cheap!

KtotheF I also have a CF/aluminum Fondriest (Carb Level 03, Monumental SAT) that I might be able to persuade my wife to part with... this is a gorgeous bike; colors / paint/ graphics wise... but some guy told her is was SUPER rare, and she might have an inflated sense of its worth... I believe that this is also a 47CM. my wife is 5'3" as well, and you can see how we set it up for her after a bike fit. (she may not want to get rid of it for sentimental reasons, but she just spent a week caring for her ailing elderly parents, and she is very aware that stuff not used, just builds up. And someone else needs to deal with it after life has passed. any internet mention of this bike (usually on forums) generally includes lamentations of past sales...i.e. "i wish i had never sold this one" and comments like "best bike I ever owned".

Oh I rode one similar to that throughout college, a Trek in that color anyway, I totally wrecked the paint by slamming it into a million bike racks, ugh, still pains me to think about it. I'll pass, thanks though!

Oh that looks like a sweet ride! I hear you about collecting stuff... just a year or two ago I ended up selling my wife's beautiful lilac cannondale touring bike that had been collecting dust for a few years... but after 9 months of being cooped up inside she's ready to give this whole cycling thing another try! So I do kind of wish I'd held onto it. Although I think she might have more fun on something a bit more sprightly, that c-dale was no lightweight.

I'll pass on this one, although thank you for posting. That ebay Mercian posted above has gotten the most interest of any bikes that I've shown her yet, progress!

Oh yes haha I posted that in that other thread. She liked that one, but the consensus is that it's way over priced, so I demurred. Although I find the longer I look the more I'm willing to spend, funny how that is...

Check out the "eBay / CraigsList finds" thread, post #59481. There's a nice Andy Gilmour complete for $300 in Tucscon. Looks to be about 48-49cm. Paint job may not be to your taste, top tube may be too long. I would post a link but I think I'm too junior on the forums. Good luck in the search!

Probably not what you're looking for (and overpriced too), but maybe helpful for triangulating exactly what you want. This Schwinn Prelude straight bar conversion in on my local CL. Since you're just looking for frame, I assume the lack of original parts isn't a problem:
