Somewhat off topic, but I have several quill stems with the same scuffs on the top of the bar clamp area. I've always wondered: what would cause this in such proliferation?

Wished I knew. I can only think of wrong reasons.

I always assumed these scratches are from people turning the bike upside down and resting it in the ground.

Plausible... if the brake levers are mounted far down towards the drops.

Bikes: too many sparkly Italians, some sweet Americans and a couple interesting Japanese

Not long ago I stopped to help two ladies on the side of the road who were trying to replace rear wheel on a lovely Pinarello Prince after installing a new tube. They were struggling with the RD as it had been left set for the largest cog. I immediately righted the bike to showed them how and was horrified to see the damage to the black stem anodizing scratched horribly by the struggle in the dirt and gravel.
