I think they are 8 AND 9. The label says 8 if 7400 series, and 9 if 7700 series? I have never used them though. Not a bar end fan.

that's indicating what derailleurs they're compatible with. if you get eight clicks on them after the first position, they're 9spd. if seven clicks, then 8spd

Yep. Absolutely. I just have not counted the clicks to confirm! I was saving them to put on a flat bar conversion of sorts, but then decided otherwise.

okay. i was just trying to clarify they will only index for 8 speeds OR 9 speeds. just not both. of course, in friction mode, you can shift any speed

Is there a setting on the shifters or a particular adjustment to switch?

I need to take a closer look!

I have 2 sets of these Shimano shifters and they index for 9 speed using either a 7700 Dura-Ace RD or an Ultegra 6700 RD. I think that the 7400 series uses these and will work with these with an extra click

So basically, you have an un-used extra click when using the 74xx RD?

yes. for the right hand shifter, there's a little ring on the periphery of the flat head assembly bolt you turn according the indicators on the surrounding black plastic ring. should say "friction mode" or "SIS"

i had to look it up, but is there a six speed 7400 group and an eight speed 7400? and, were the dura ace eight and nine speeds the same spacing?

Will these work with other derailleur not DA or Ultegra? Is the left hand for a double or a triple?

Just to add a little clarification/confusion. I am running 9 speed STIs (7700 series) with an 8 speed (7400 series) rear derailleur and 8 speed cassette on one of my bikes. It shifts perfectly.
So.... the bar end shifters should work with both 7400 series 8 speed and 7700 series 9 speed.

Front shifter is friction and works with any FD.
In theory, rear shifter will index only with a 740X RD for 8 speeds OR with any Shimano RD except 740X for 9 speeds, OR any RD in friction setting.
Never used one that way myself, but that’s what’s supposed to happen according to legend.

I am embarrassed to know so much less about these than you all...yeesh!

I do know the friction setting is okay.

i just assumed it could only shift eight speed versions of 7400 and all versions of the x700 series of nine speeds (DA, Ult, etc...)

Like I said above, I was going to try to use it at the end of flat bars on a city gravel thing with an a Ultegra 9 RD and a triple up front. I figured it was intended for the 9...

sorry, i'm just quite intrigued as to how this is possible that a shifter can index both 8 and 9 speed spacing. how can a change in the derailleur affect that functioning?

Clarification on the 8/9 question.

For its 8 speed generation, Dura Ace had a different pull ratio from the other groups -- ultegra, 105, the mountain stuff. That's why you can't use a 7400 rear derailleur with any other 8 speed shimano shifter. It will only work with a 7400 shifter.

When Shimano went to 9 speed, they adopted the pull ratio from 7400 and applied it across the board to all groups. So 9 speed Dura Ace is cross compatible with 9 speed XT and 9 speed ultegra, etc.

These shifters have that same 7400/9 speed pull ratio. They will therefore work in 8 speed with 7400 or in 9 speed with anything else. If 7400, you will have an extra click, but that would be prohibited by properly limiting out the RD.
