Hey, sloar , which model is the 8-speed cassette? I can't remember whether all Shimano 8-speed cassettes are compatible with both Dura Ace and non-DA shifters and rear derailleurs. I have both Dura Ace and Ultegra 8-speed RDs, but only DA brifters.

I have one Shimano 8-speed 12-25 cassette, that came free with a nice older wheelset (Mavic rims, Ultegra hubs) that I bought used a few weeks ago. I worried that my 64 year old legs would prefer something like a 28T big cog, but on my lighter carbon fiber bike it turns out I can handle most of our short, steep hillettes with the 39T small chainring and 21 or 25 cog. But I couldn't find a model number on that cassette. It's currently paired with older Ultegra 8-speed RD and MicroShift brifters.

If I understand Sheldon's chart correctly, your 8sp DA brifters should work with any 8sp Shimano cassette. You need either the DA rear mech or a non-DA rear mech using alternate cable routing. So, the cassette should be agnostic -- it's the shifter/derailleur interface that could cause issues if not matched up correctly.

You guys both have the 12-25 "W" cassette. The 13-26 "V" cassette shifts the whole range down a tooth (with a little better progression IMO), but probably not enough if you're wanting a 28.

Hopefully some minor thread-****ting is okay since I don't see a sale happening in this instance, but here's an idea for canklecat : if you start with your 12-25 and buy an 11-28 or 11-32 8-speed cassette (pretty sure HG31/HG41/HG50/HG51 would all work), you could steal the 24 and 28 from the new cassette and replace the 23/25 on the old one for a pretty decent 12-13-15-17-19-21-24-28 progression. The 600 Tricolor RD can absolutely handle a 28T, DA lists a max cog of 26T, but I suspect it could be made to work too.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

Due to some pesky upper respiratory inflammation I'm gonna pass on the cassette for now, so let top506 snag this one. I'll cross my fingers for the next opportunity.

I've been off the bike due to vertigo and on Prednisone for a month for this dang respiratory thing and felt great yesterday, so I got all excited about finishing an 8-speed build for my 1993 Trek 5900 OCLV. Got the Dura Ace stuff ready to install, just needed a closer spaced cassette than the 11-28 SunRace I bought awhile ago. SunRace are good, but I dislike 11T small cogs - they feel grindy, and I'm not strong enough on flat terrain to take advantage of a 53/11 top gear.

But I must have overdone it jogging this weekend (I'm less worried about falling off my feet than off my bike). I jogged 7 miles Friday and 5 Monday. Today I'm stumbling around bouncing off walls because this inner ear congestion is messing with my equilibrium.

Excuse the rant whine. Beautiful mild sunny weather here, perfect for bicycling, and all I can do is cast longing gazes at my lonesome bicycles.
