FS: 1983 Univega Super Special frameset 60 cm VERY PIC HEAVY!
 

Howdy!

It's my first time listing a sale on BF, and hope to have a pleasant transaction all the way around.
I have a 1983 Univega Super Special frameset that was a Craigslist purchase last year. It's 60 cm and just too much bike for me.
It was purchased in pretty much original condition and it had Camapagnolo Super Record group on it. I did a full restore and rode it a couple times before realizing that it was too big. A few months later I picked up a Fuso 56 (also on Craigslist) and I wound up putting all the Campagnolo on it.
So now the Univega is up for sale.
Deets:
1983 Super Special 60 CM, Tange Champion tubing throughout. It has the red letter decal, so #1 or #2, not sure. It has the Team Miyata bottom bracket shell, so most likely a Miyata-built frame. Has Campagnolo dropouts.
100/126 spacing, British threaded BB, 26.8 seat post. Let me know if I've missed anything...
It's a beautiful, lightly pearlescent light red with silver decals. There are several small abrasions to the paint on the drive side of the top tube near the center. There are a few random scratches to the paint, but I really feel confident calling this an 8/10 frameset.

Please note that it does not include the seat post or seat post binder bolt. Also, no crown race on the fork.

I have always been a super-fan of the Univega/Lotus pearl pink, but I think this is even a bit nicer. Nice touches throughout. It almost seems too nice and fresh to be original...!

:thumb: Great frame set and story and while this one is great, the Fuso is a big upgrade IMO. ;)

BB cutouts are fantastic, don't think I have seen that before and always think the spool brace is a very cool aesthetic win, seems more purposeful and better to me than a tube.

AND we need to see the Fuso plz, thread?

Tx, very nice, love his color schemes, always look like they mean business to me when I see one and he did.

He came to PDX on a shop tour several years ago, poor turnout but he was very gracious, a great time getting the history straight from the source.

I have 3 of his with #4 on its way, one way too small 53, one a little small 60, a plenty big 64 later one with a some corners cut and a nice big enough, nice 62 earlier one coming.

He is/was very much the real deal, his bikes are fantastic. ;) .

How cool! I've been catching up on his blog and have become a fan of his writing as well as his design sensibility. I've traded a couple cordial emails with him and joined the registry.

Tx, it was very cool. The big later one is the right size but has not the cool early paint, sticker HB a bit less flourish and a decidedly different vibe to it but was a smokin deal. Literally got home from getting that one and found the one on the way. It was also a good deal so I broke my current "no too small frames" rule, can make it work and will. :twitchy:

Dave is a treasure and consummate builder in every sense IMO, hopefully I find an early one my size someday, I will probably pay dearly if need be.

please excuse this hijack but I have a Fuso fork that I never found a matching frame to use with and think it should go to a new home and be re-united with a Fuso frame, if possible.

It's the same color dark red paint as bargo68 example and same crown and it has a "56" stamp on the steerer, Campy forkends.
As some know Dave only adds the minimum length of threading for the frame it's to match with so not a lot of "mixing/matching" is possible.

Anyhow the specs are: 183mm steerer length and 15mm (yep that's all, folks) threading length.

I have not heard of the "registry" before, can you shoot me a link to that, please? merziac

My thought is that's the best path to finding someone who can use this fork as it should be.

is the Super Special roughly equivalent to the Team, or Pro Miyata? Not as familiar with the Univega hierarchy.

This would be tippy top of the line in that era, so yes, roughly equivalent. My Competizione is a step or two below (and a little older) but a fantastic frame/bike.

You're welcome and no worries, the ping thing seems to shift around a bit. I always type out unworthy1, then go back and add @, then manually move the cursor away with the mouse. If the auto populate comes up it won't carry the @ with it.

You can see I don't have a grasp of all of this either as I didn't mean for my after thoughts after the fact to link to the blog link. :foo:

Great, thanks for the info. Looked around for an '83 Univega catalog, but only found the mtn. bike version. Their catalog photos are good for a laugh, at least.

Several of those photos in the catalog were slightly inappropriate...also, note all of the high end bikes are men modelled...

I never realized how many models they tried to push through in those years.
