Cable guide question

Let’s say you had a bike that had suffered some rust damage on its top tube due to corroded brake cable clamps. You deal with the rust spots, one of which was quite large, but now what, do you reattach the same cable clamps? Do you try to sand down the inside of the cable clamps to make them smooth? Do you use electrical tape underneath? Do you use zip ties?

Looking for any and all advice, this is really the only thing left for me to do on my Moto Grand Jubile.

Wtb non corroded cable clamps

Well while I’m here … does anyone have 1” cable clamps that are not corroded?

I have some nice Shimano clamps. I’ve done this before, removed all 3 guides filed down painted and used clamps.

Just might take you up on those guides if I can’t get these sorted.

What did you paint them with? What I’m worried about is they’re already a tight fit so wouldn’t painting them make it an even tighter fit?

New clamps, old clean clamps, but no zip ties!

I had a similar issue when I restored my 1975 Grand Record a year ago. I wound up tossing the highly rusted Huret clips and replaced them with NOS Campagnolo clips.

You can either solder new cable guides or use clips. I found a Trek 500 frame on CL that someone had removed all cable guides. I bought a Lot of Dura Ace cable guides but decided that soldering would be more honest.

Sand frame at rust spots, coat of primer, light sand, coat of paint...
Clean up clamps and reuse...
