I spend a lot of time on the water in the summer season and on the bikes.

I use a Patagonia sun mask whenever I am in the boat and I always lather on SPF 30 when I am biking.

Voodoo science?

I don't think so.

BTW Buy some vitamin D tablets and take one with your breakfast/Centrum.

Patagonia file photo. No sharkies lost their life according to the comment with this pic.

why not SPF 100? If your going to wear it/buy it you may as well.

You will have to pay more for the higher SPF product but you will not receive any additional significant protection over SPF 15 and SPF 30.

Me too.

Hard to imagine that that fish didn't get injured, with a big gaff in its mouth. But that's another thread.
When you're out on the water for 5 or 6 hours you get the double whammy of reflected sunlight too.
I use a Buff mask too. Always a hat. And usually sun gloves, when I remember to put them on.
I'm not ultra religious about applying sunscreen. My hands are a testament to how often I didn't use it when I was younger.
The oldest looking part of me.

This thread inspired me to read about sunscreens and the chemicals they use in them. Some are a little scary. That's one reason I switched to Titanium and Zinc oxides. According to the studies I've read, the nano particles of these do not absorb through the skin, like many of the chemicals used in sunscreens do.

But like I said, it's a personal choice. Wouldn't want to "nanny" anyone.

I hear you on the shark pic, but what do I know.

I believe everything on the web, especially on a fishing blog. :)

I follow the same protocol as you on clothing and always wear long sleeve shirts.

My skin can't handle the day after day exposure, as we fish constantly during the season.

I'm even guiding a few groups this summer.

As for using sunscreen while biking, I like Elemental Herbs "Sunscreen Sport" for daily use. SPF 30.

Zinc oxide based, it seems to work well for me. Recommended.

Does that mask help keep pollen out of your nose? it might also be the ticket to keep from aspirating the occasional bug.

Don't worry, it's just a friendly suggestion. A nanny won't be dispatched to spank your bum if you don't take the advice.

Long sleeve western shirt. Poly/cotton blend. Light color if possible. Done.
(This from Southern Arizona, where we know a thing or two about sunshine.)

Note that I don't actually do this most of the time. I just cover my head with a cap and go. But it's the simplest, most time-tested solution out here. And no goop to apply.

I've started applying sunscreen to my face and chest -- and of course immediately broke out in pimples. Augh.

I live in cloudy Oregon and our state has the 3rd highest rate of skin cancer in the US. Big surprise. I'm hit and miss with the sun screen, except for my face & neck (fixing wrinkles & skin damage is expensive), so preventative is good in my book. Of course during the summer my face/neck does not match the rest of my body in color. Oh well.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=443014

This happens to be a winter skin tone photo.

ever seen the enslaved that work in qatar? generally speaking, these people are very dark skinned (unlike my pasty self) and still cover themselves all over, else they suffer even more.

that just doesn't happen here. every once in a great while, i might see a pro golfer wearing a long-sleeve white shirt. more often, though, i'll see a guy that's younger than me, but looks at least ten years older.

SPF is not just about UV protection though, with a higher SPF you wont get as burned/tanned

rootboy 04-04-15 06:18 PM

I like the Neutrogena stick. 50 spf, I think. Easy to apply and I don't get it all over my fingers, and then fly line.

I am sure the bike is C&V. Notice the non-aero brake hood levers on the handlebar ;)
