Which Simplex FD is this?
 

Vintage Simplex Front Derailleur Clamp on 28 6 | eBay

On the lookout for a Simplex LJ or SLJ set of front and rear derailleurs. What is this one? Doesn't look like it has the SLJ stamp on it.

C9H13N is correct. It seems like a SJA 102. Both the clamp on and braze on versions work really well. I've used them and the LJ/SLJ and functionally there is little to choose between them except for finish.

These FDs work pretty well but were made kinda cheaply made with 100% pressed and bent steel parts, while the SLJ FDs had nicer cast aluminum parts, and will pair better aesthetically with SLJ RDs. Just make sure you get the version that works best with your frameset as there is a version with a front pull cable arrangement and a rear pull version too.

It's hard to find a SLJ FD with a housing stop. Maybe that's why Motobecane paired the SJA 102 with a SLJ 6000 RD. I have the set on my Gitane. I just had to change the tags from Motobecane to Simplex.

This model should not be tightened heavily onto the seat tube, else the hinge-tab on the front plate tends to break off.

Better to tighten moderately, then re-torque moderately after the first ride, after the clamp and paint have perhaps conformed to each other's presence.

Good derailer function-wise, as Chombi has said. You can even buy new replacement decals for the outer link on Ebay.

I don't know about decals. I bought aluminum tags that are glued on.

That is a good point. I need a cable stop.

Older frames often need those stops. I think that is why SLJ's with a stop are hard to find. They came a bit later. I think I've seen one.
