Original rims for Paramount?

What rims came on the 1966 P-13? I have two different rims on mine, and I'd like to get a correct pair. Thanks

iirc some of them came through with the Weinmann wood-filled tubular rims.

Metacortex 05-21-15 08:36 PM

According to the dealer spec. book they were p/n 3979 (82 822), which appear in the parts catalog as Weinmann hollow tubulars for sew-up tires. Wood-filled tubulars also show up in the book, but under a different part number.

thanks very much for this excellent information Metacortex! :thumb:

happy to learn me memory was not too far off. :o

afaik these rims were only offered with a fine serration pattern on the braking surface; is this what your catalogue materials show?

Thanks again.

Unfortunately the parts catalogs show no images or any other information about those rims (and I have multiple years worth). I do know that Weinmann had knurled versions of its rims, but so far it seems as if Schwinn would use them sometimes and then not. For example I've seen knurled versions of the Weinmann clincher rims on several original '71 Sports Tourers, however the catalogs list them as the same p/n as the non-knurled rims and there is no separate number or callout for knurled versions. After riding on them I can tell you they really howl and seem to really eat up the old pads!

Aha! Perhaps there was a plan there, since Weinmann made both the rims AND the brake pads... ;)

wrt "really howl" - a local ciclismo amico used to refer to this phenomenon as "calliope trumpeter brakes"

Thanks again Metacortex!

I've read that you could get clincher or tubular. Could this Weinmann rim be original?

but Metacortex wilst knoweth best! ;)

I believe both tubular and clincher would have been available on the P13 back then (tubular only for '70 and later). The clinchers would have been from Weinmann, and that looks about right. Hopefully somebody with an original mid-'60s Paramount could verify for sure.

one thing i found interesting about this period is that 700 wired-ons were sufficiently odd/rare that Schwinn chose to build the frames to accept both size wheels. probably thinking that 700 wired-on tyres would be a difficult item to locate for the owner.

things were to change subsequently...

The Weinmann wood filled rims were rebranded Scheerens.
Very Cool.
Polish up like Chrome, with double butted Union chrome spokes… sparkle sparkle.

Weinmann hollow tubular rims of the period really really looked like Duralca rims.

Never seen that profile. (Scheeren's are flatter in the interior surface.)

Scheeren did make rims with Milremo Branding.

Thanks, those are pretty rare I would imagine.

I have looked lone and carefully for my Scheeren rims.

They are so Patrick Sercu.

They came with my mod B out of Berlin. Horrible condition. After 4 years of riding the rear went. Hilary Stone had a set. Otherwise, they seem to pop up on ebay every 3-4 months.

The Weinmann rims that came on the '71 Paramount P-13 I just picked up have the lightly knurled braking surface. I suspect that these rims are original to the bike. Could the knurling be a late 60's - early 70's revision?

So far that seems to be the case. So far I've only seen this on some '71 Sports Tourers, but I believe the Paramount used different Weinmann rims. Interesting to hear that they were also showing up knurled around the same time. Could you post close-up pics of any stampings or labeling on the rims?

Weinmann clincher rims, especially the ones that had dimples around the spoke holes, often had that serrated pattern. It didn't seem to improve braking effectiveness in the slightest, though there was an audible difference. We used to smooth the pattern off with fine sandpaper...

Mine have the same decals that iab shows; there are no other stampings that I can find. They are also wood filled. What was the purpose for doing this?
