The vintage Full Chaincase installation thread
Hello everybody,
I recently received this beauty: Vintage Bike Bicycle Chain Gaurd Guard Chaincase Full Raleigh Replica | eBay It is a replica of a Raleigh full chaincase. I got it for my Eastman roadster and I cannot wait to install this baby! However, I searched through the net for a complete guide (with pictures) that explains how to handle it and I could not find much. Thus, I decided to create this thread, with the hope that some of you seasoned riders will be able to provide a detailed guide for these chaincases. Anyway, down to business: 1. How should I remove the plate cover? Sheldon Brown says it's like "removing a paint can lid" but I have never opened one, lol. 2. My Eastman roadster does not have a hole behind the right crank. Is it still possible to install it, or how should I modify my bike to fit the case? 3. My roadster does have removable seat stays, so I suppose this should make the installation easier. I appreciate your help!!! Alex |
Ok, I already figured out how to remove the cover. The fitting kit it came with is this one: Vintage Bike Bicycle Chain Guard Gard Fitting Kit Bolt Brakcet Raleigh BSA | eBay
The rear fixing bracket seems obviously designed to tighten the chaincase to the seat stay. One bolt does this job, and I presume the other bolt the kit comes with should tighten the case near the right crank. However, I have noticed my roadster does NOT have a threaded boss behind the right crank (Raleighs DID have this threaded boss for the chaincases, right?), so I have no idea how I will tighten the case near the right crank. Any suggestions on what mounts to use for this will be greatly appreciated. I am hoping it won't be necesary to drill a hole in my bike right behind the right crank! |
