Vintage Peugeot Parts Advice

Hello all,

I recently bought a 70s? Peugeot frame (see below).

http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...geot-px10.html

I am on the hunt for parts for the bike - I am installing modern components (to save on cost/ ease of sourcing), sorry to everyone on this forum! I have found a french threaded bottom bracket, and I believe I also need a french threaded headset. I am from the UK - what is the best way to get one?

I also was wondering about the brakes - will modern brakes work, or do I need to find long drop brakes/ add a spacer like sheldon brown mentions on his website. (I know about the problems with the different bolts).

Many thanks as ever

I don't think you need long reach brakes. I've used 1st generation Dura Ace and Campy Super Record on mine with both 700C and 27" wheels. My PX10 is a bit older, so it's best to measure before you buy.

I have late 70s-early 80s PKN-10, very similiar to yours. If you don't care about keeping it period correct, Tektro R539 should work for brakes. I still have the Weinmann 605 calipers that came with my bike in my parts box, but I wanted the better stopping power of the modern dual-pivots. Whichever way you go, just make sure that it uses a nutted bolt, and not a recessed mount.

Veloorange has some french headsets for a decent price. VO French Thread Headset I'm not sure how much shipping to the UK would run. Since you are in the UK, I would check out Hilary Stone for other pieces. You may be able to get a lot of the components from him for not much shipping cost.

I believe the pickings for French-threaded parts are better on your side of the pond than on ours. I even bought some off ebay in France once or twice.

Your frame should take normal reach brakes. Put 700c wheels in and measure the distance from the brake bolt hole to the middle of the rim.

Have your local bike shop install the headset and bottom bracket. Do the rest of the work yourself.

My 1980 PKN-10, now my elder son's only road bike (I paid for his Cannondale Rush mountain bike as his college graduation present), came with relatively short reach nutted Galli sidepulls, which work well with KoolStop pads.

Thank you all for your advice. Does this headset fit the bill?

Good to hear about the brakes. Will take it along to my local bike shop and double check the measurements.

Is the bolt that clamps the seatpost a standard bit of kit, or do I have to be more careful about which one I buy?

oddjob2, thank you very much. I am doing my best to keep costs down, so shipping from Canada is probably not an option right now, as it would push up prices... If I get stuck for parts over here I will PM you if that is alright? Cheers!

Many thanks as ever!

Yes it is a PX10. Everything fits for mid to late 70's PX10.

No, it does not. You need a headset that's French threaded.....
