"Flipper Blue Tape" - It Made My Day

And no, every bike that has new blue color handlebar tape on it is not a stolen bike. BUT, a high percentage of bikes for sale that have new blue color handlebar tape (and/or new cheap tires, and/or a cheap new seat) on them are flip bikes.

The above quote is from the C & V appraisal section circa April 2015. Besides the new hat, see last photo, the Flipper Blue Bar Tape made my day!

While I'm not obsessed by Roadguy's comment, it comes to mind whenever I look at my 1989 Trek 360, which I hadn't yet ridden this year. Yesterday, I aired up the tires in the morning and rode to the Belle Isle Grand Prix and then later in the evening for the Critical Mass Ride, for a total of about 35 miles of riding. I got about six (6) comments on how nice that bike looked and was finished out, more than almost any other bike in my stable. :D

That blue tapes work well.

And I really like voluminous continental tires :P

RobbieTunes 05-30-15 08:29 AM

Great thread.

I'm not sure I can say why.

The unsung hero is that gorgeous blue Vetta. I think it's what makes the build.

I believe they are over-inflated.

Be careful, and be respectful.

I don't think she was the Continental rep at NAHBS, though.

oddjob, you look just like you did in the movies.

I have no idea of what this thread is about. And I guess that's OK.

Looks like a nice perch for your hands... um... the blue tape that is. Got a double wrap of Cinelli denim color cork on my new but vintage looking bike. I must be flippin crazy, or maybe it is just the perfect compliment to an orange bike.

Any man who drives a Honda 500 miles while only turning left and never leaving town is questionable.

I believe he drives for Penske, which is running Chevy engines this season.

USAZorro 05-30-15 09:27 PM

Blue tape is a red herring.

I invite Juan Pablo, and any other interested persons representing Continental for a scenic ride tomorrow. :)

I'm lost too. Other than the bike photo, what do the others have to do with your quoted post?

So, 3M isn't selling a new line of bike products at home depot?

Especially after a fender bender early on. It was obvious by 100 miles that JPM was a man on a mission in a beast of a car. That he even stayed on the lead lap was a pretty good feat. Tires that can take it, an engine that lasted, and driving like a madman under control, I figured he'd either break the motor or see the wall. His NASCAR buds were all rooting for him, from what I've heard, had the TV's going in all the shops and trailers.

No, but Wal-Mart is selling Veloflex tires.

Oddjob2 I love your 360! And I've always been a big fan of high pressure continental's too. Thanks for sharing.

I've always thought yellow bikes were/are special... (my first road bike was a '63 Varsity in what they called "coppertone"). About a month ago I saw a Trek 1400 aluminum... that I just had to own. And I ended up trading my 2 vintage steel winter project bikes for that aluminum. The 1400 is a great bike... very light and fast. But I felt displaced not owning a real steel bicycle.

Well just today.... I found this:
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=456553

All I've done with the bike so far is some cleaning and a few drops of oil. I don't know for sure yet.... but I think that might be the original "blue handle bar tape". If the tape is original.... I will be re-wrapping the bars... using the same tape but hopefully hiding a few scars. If I don't re-use the tape..... I too will be joining the ranks of "flippers" by ordering some cheap blue handle bar tape from China. I like the look!

I think my picture is better.

LOL, I think that comment was in response to me. I tend to tell people they're being paranoid about suspecting every other bike on CL is stolen.

Steve Whitlatch 06-07-15 04:27 PM

I have no idea what this thread is about either but now I find I want a nice pair of Continentals for some strange reason. :)

oddjob2 06-07-15 05:49 PM

@ Dave Cutter, thanks for the praise. Enjoy your new find!

I find the 360 to be a very comfortable and responsive bike. I run 28mm tires on it. The bar tape is Cinelli or Nashbar. I was lucky to score the saddle on ebay for about $20.

For those lusting to get their hands on a nice pair, low cost Contis in 23mm and 28mm for $10 are available at REI. Obviously, at that price, they are not Gatorskins.

Continental Ultra Sport Tire - Multiple Sizes - REI.com

I've got a 1992 yellow and white RB-1 that should be finished this week, as I just bought a roll of yellow SIS housing.

Lascauxcaveman 06-07-15 05:49 PM

If I was Swedish, I would salute that bike, OddJob.

(I'm already saluting Ms. Continental.)
