I'm still considering these tires and will probably try them next. I know you love them and rate them quite high. but i had to buy 3 pairs of tires at once, so i choose the more budget option. The gravel kings look a lot like the chinook pass, just all black. similar tread pattern though. I am quite happy with them so far. I'll grab a set of these compass tires soon though to try out. so many folks rave about them, it must be true.

Anyway, found a gem of a part Saturday, a silver Jean Paul Routens seat post that fits!!! I got it for 5 bucks too! Its a really good post, super fine adjustments, nice far setback, i dig the fluting as well.

Also put the rear rack from my Serotta on the French bike. Not sure why, just want to try it out for a bit. Ill take it off at some point soon, as I think it detracts from the overall look, but I wanted to see how it does a bit more loaded.

now a new shimano hyperglide 12-28 in the back, and shes much faster. ditched the rear rack. jpr stem not quite tall enough either, so back tot he mavic and the brooks saddle. will probably get a Berthoud saddle to start breaking in as well.
this bike is so damn fun i hardly ride the Serotta.
plus the Serotta is a toch too big it seems. this bike is so right at 54x55, or whatever it is. or maybe its not the size, maybe there's something else about it?

yes, there is a coting on the fenders. its wearing at the bottoms. when it wears more ill remove and polish the enders, but for now the protection is probably good.

while the point of the thread is a beautiful french bicycle you seem to have completely missed, yes, I am aware of the compass tire being lighter, I own both. I have compass 28mm on 2 bikes and gravel kings on 4. the compass are a thinner material and lighter for sure, especially because i bought the extra legers. they are also sexier. The tires are still very similar, ride similar, grip similar, and have a similar tread pattern, they are even both made by the same company, panaracer. so there, now its definitely exhausted.

So, I took your tip and have GKs coming in 28s and 32s for a couple of bikes.
I bet they'll work well.
I also have a set of Soma Vitesse SL and a set of Vitesse EXs going on two bikes.
I've been going wider on tires over the last three years, so this has been an expensive late winter refitting bikes.
I know forum member Toavii has a set of the Somas as well, so we should be able to get loads of feedback on these tires over the next six months.
So does Panaracer make the Somas as well?
If they do, the GKs, Compass tires and perhaps the Somas speak very highly of their r&d efforts.

Nice!
Did you change the crank arms? I wouldn't have... But if you still have the 162.5 set and want them gone, please let me know....

I have changed nearly everything at this point, and even put new threads into the BB to make it "english threaded". Yeah yeah yeah, blashpemy or something, but i ride this bike a lot, and now its plenty updated for a while with Record 10s which is superior in every way to what was on there. I no longer have the crankset (at least not the short one, i still have the drilled one), but i think i have the rest of the sachs new success kit around.
