Raleigh Space Rider with 5 speed hub :: Resurgence
Raleigh Space Rider with 5 speed Sturmey Archer hub
Notice the original vintage parts. Location: The Old Capital - Spanish Town, Jamaica W.I. (Once a British colony before the 1960s) http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...pscron5sl0.jpg http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...psy71lnkp6.jpg http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...psxwnmqohn.jpg |
It looks like the old type 5 speed with two toggle chains, with added derailleur, two front and 5 speed casette rear? Not sure what that adds up to though. The owner has had lots of fun and done a very good job :- )

That's an interesting setup looks like a 4x3 older rear setup with a modern double front. Very interesting way to get to 20 plus gears.

It's an S5 hub. It has the same trigger shifter on the right and Suntour friction shifter on the left that I'm using with my Raleigh with S5/2.
He also has a SA grip shifter. I think that the grip shifter is connected to the RD. There is no FD. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...90/14/gt33.jpg It's not to my taste, but it's done well. |
Is it this hub?

Like I said, it's an S5 Only the S5 uses a bell crank. It's visible in the first photo.
What's interesting to me is that the RD appears to be operated by a SA hub shifter. |

The trigger shifter controls 3 speeds (just a with a regular 3 speed hub) and the grip shifter controls the additional 2 speeds. The grip shifter is routed to the left side of the axle and uses a push rod. |

The Suntour friction shifter controls the RD for the 5 speed gear block. |
The grip shifter is what I'm talking about. It's for a SA 3 speed. See my post number 4.

I have an old Sachs 5 speed (Pentasport H5111), 1980s type gear hub. It has a single shifter for the two cables, works fine. Is the SA hub made differently, making it difficult to have a simpler shifter function? At least with the added derailleur, you end up with a lot of shifters.
|
The owner must have swapped in a threaded driver for the freewheel, too. A lot of work was put into that bike.

Pretty sure that's a repaint.

Where can I get a left side Suntour friction shifter to buy?

I found a Suntour left side handlebar shifter on ebay. I works great for the S5 on my Sprite. It has a ratchet on the up pull. When you push the lever down, it over rides the ratchet, so there's less friction to overcome when you add tension to the cable. Clever.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=463181 edit to add: I think this shifter is especially good for this hub because, since you don't have to overcome the friction when you add tension to the cable, it gives you a better feel that helps shifting. With this hub, the right side works just like an AW, but the left is trickier to engage. You have to freewheel, add some tension to the cable and rotate the crank forward until you feel the shifter slip forward a bit as the hub changes gear. |

Any friction shifter should work fine for this.
