Rubber Cement Glue- BULK???

Where can you get the rubber cement glue used with repair patches in BULK? I am not interested in the little tubes that come with the patch kits. Thanks!!!

Would this work? Similar in composition to patch cement, I think. And very strong.

Thailand. In the supermarkets when I was on holiday there four or five years ago I found litre tin cans of patch cement for around £2.00 and was very tempted to bring a few cans back. However, with all the other stuff my good lady had already bought I decided this was pushing the luggage allowance too far :(. I haven't seen any similar quantities for sale in the UK.

Would this product work with the rubber patches for inner tube repair? Is this what you use?

Not really. I mean yes, contact cement and regular old "rubber cement" sold in stationery stores will work, after a fashion, but for best results get a real vulcanizing cement. Niagara Cyclery sells larger cans of Rema cement. That's about the best there is. I prefer to get fairly small tubes, though, small enough that I can carry at least one extra whenever I ride my bike any distance. They have a tendency to dry out.

Nah. I would use the Rema stuff RHM recommends. It's available in quarts and gallon cans.

The problem is usually I have more patches left over than glue. I would like to have a large bottle of glue for home repair and keep a small tube with me on my bike rides.

I am planing to try DAP cement to repair my next patch job I carry a small bottle with me when I ride my clincher bikes. I have used it successfully for tubular cement though it is not an indicated usage.

I understand! Tubes of glue go bad; unused patches do not. Search for "Vulcanizing cement" or "vulcanizing glue" on Amazon or google shopping, and you'll see lots of options, including some you'll find at a auto parts store. I'm pretty sure as long as the word "vulcanizing" is used, you'll be okay. I got a lot of ten little tubes of Slime vulcanizing cement a year or two ago, which has kept me mostly out of trouble.

Speaking of that, just what is "Vulcanizing " cement, Rudi? I mean, I understand the concept in tire making. Heat, etc. But in patch cement, is it a chemical melting of the patch rubber, or something?

Well, I was going to say it's a process of lowering the tube down into a volcano where Vulcan and his minions pound on it with giant hammers.... but then I googled it:

"Vulcanization (or vulcanisation) is a chemical process for converting natural rubber or related polymers into more durable materials via the addition of sulfur or other equivalent curatives or accelerators. These additives modify the polymer by forming cross-links (bridges) between individual polymer chains."

But when i say "use a vulcanizing cement" what I really mean is "make sure you use a cement that is specifically formulated for this purpose. Other glues may work... just not as well."

Thanks for the advice. I was able to find a big bottle of Slime Rubber Cement on Amazon for a reasonable price. :thumb:

Keep in mind, once you first open that bottle, the shelf-life clock on it starts ticking immediately. This is why I prefer to buy a lot of little tubes instead of one big one; or at least a squeeze tube where all of the air can be purged before recapping, thereby extending shelf life.

And thanks for reminding me, I need to restock! :thumb:
