Anyone Have a Mariposa?
 

I would love to see some pics. I think one of these might be my next Grail Bike.

I was gifted one a year ago and slide it right along to another buddy.

Beautiful frameset, but mine had the top tube eaten away with severe rust after sitting under a leaky roof.

A local builder is in the process of redoing the top tube and a full refinish.

Will post pics this late fall.

They still make Mariposa but the original builder has retired from what I gather.

I had a fully kitted randonneuse but the frame was just a smidge too short and I sold it. Fabulous workmanship and thought in the design. Mike Barry had retired but has returned with his son and daughter-in-law and Mariposas are being built again. The web site is here. They are seriously worth considering either used (rare) or new.

I've been planning my Mariposa for the past year but I would have to give up all my other bikes and coffee and a happy wife to afford one. ;)
I'm on vacation so I thought about taking the five hour drive to see them but I don't know if there is anything to see?
Is there a store selling parts, or just an office with the craftsmen in the back?

The one I briefly had was quite similar to this one, but white in color.

It will be red after the refinish.

I used to work at Bicyclesport in the 80's which was likely the peak of Mariposa production and I assembled quite a few of them and rode quite a few more. Mike. Michael, Dede and Tom will look after you very well if you contact them. I would wholeheartedly support the idea of getting one. I would also state that for the most part, mariposa bikes are relatively inexpensive when compared to other custom builds, especially when looking at a randonneur style bike.

Mariposas were the favourite ride of one of Canada's most famous and beloved artists of the 70s/80s: Greg Curnoe.

Bikes and Jeeps-

The Mariposa location on Cranfield Drive is in an industrial condo building.(Last time I was there) Access is through the front doors and down a long corridor then into the Mariposa unit on the left of the hall. There is a smallish front area devoted to parts and bicycle display. This is worth the visit alone. There are wonderful, tall, wooden period display cases and classic Mariposas as well as examples of Mike Barry's unsurpassed bicycle collection. To the rear is the mechanical and build area where the framesets are actually built and painted. If you are in Toronto, it is well worth the visit.The Mariposa site is here.

If there is such a thing as a Grail Bike, for me, then it would be a Mariposa. I would, in a heartbeat, trade my two best vintage bicycles, for an unrestored Mariposa in my size!

FWIW Your Mariposa and my Weigle have the same color scheme.

Is the white on yours on a creme color?

Almost certainly cream. My Weigle-ized Raleigh Competition was painted by Ed Litton, he told me that cream is the way to go, calling it "Rivendell white." I picked out this color scheme based on another Mariposa paint scheme that I saw on the interwebs:

Thanks! Nicer then the Herse, on par with the Weigle. The ride is amazing, super comfortable, yet very responsive.
