Kuwahara Sport road 12....Help?

Please help me identify this wonderful bike.

5.5/10 condition mostly bad paint otherwise just needs some loving.

Suntour Group with Compe brakes and Win Pista bars and stem.
XL Frame(26") Only markings are Kuwahara and sport with Kuwahara Badge.
Serial Number: 8506-51673
Looking to rebuild it right.

Those big knobby shifters make me wonder if it's from the early '80s. My '84ish Sport Ten had smaller stem shifters. It also had the same 012 hi-tensile tubing. That style of head badge is totally unfamiliar to me. Maybe imports to the southern states got different badging? Clean it up nice but don't invest crazy amounts of money into it.

I've got a very similar bike. It's a 1980 American Flyer Emperor by Kuwahara. Has same 012 tubing decal. Equipped with Suntour & Shimano 600. A nicely equipped bicycle. The serial number is on the lower end of seat tube. 1st two numbers indicate year of manufacture. So, you must have an 1985. I'm about 1/2 way through restoring mine. Converting it to upright handlebars. Looks like it's going to be a solid ride. Compares to other Japanese bikes of the time. Fuji, Univega.

Thank you for the great information.

Took it completely apart today except the BB and everything was in very good shape.
I did change out the crankset to vintage Campagnola Mirage set up.
Plus I added my vintage campy wheelset because the old shimano set was crazy heavy.
Everything else is staying as is except I'm going to add my spare Brooks B17 saddle.
And some better bar tape of course.

Just got back from an easy 15 mile ride and everything went great. Just some minor adjustments but otherwise very nice.
Can't wait to ride again tomorrow.
