Got a "L'Eroica" bike? Intentions?

After the success of C&V bikes at the Dairyland Dare, I've begun to scratch that itch.
I'm going to keep scratching, as the event is now more open to C&V, and expanding on it. (Now registering for 2016, too!)
The Dare has been, for me, an exercise in a bike I can actually finish on vs. the bike I want to bring.

After a couple of Dares and Bartali, I realize I want to get with the program, a bit.

I'm sure someone will post a bike that doesn't meet L'Eroica's rules, and someone will spot it.
Be nice, eh?

Basically:
1- Bike must be pre-1989 (some sites say 1987)
2- Bike must use toe clips (let's just say no clipless)
3- Brake cable must exit the top of the levers
4- DT shifters

If so, post it. I'm looking right now, have a candidate in my sights.

I'll include a poll, too. Thanks.

Just purchased an early 1970's Motobecane Grand Record with an eye towards riding it in next years Eroica. It came from Forum member VonCarlos. It is sweet!

I've currently got four bikes and every one of them will technically qualify for L'Eroica, although my two '80s bikes would definitely be pushing the rules a bit.

If I find myself living back on the West Coast next year (a distinct possibility), I'll definitely try to do L'Eroica. Probably on my Raleigh International.

I've owned what is still my primary ride for 30+ yrs. Even with a classic Italian frame, and DT shifters.

However, I'm not beyond modernizing a few details for comfort or convenience.

I could probably rebuild the old Colnago back to "Eroica" standards, but don't really see a point in doing it. I like the bike as it is (well, I'll still tinker a bit).

I do now own other bikes that may be closer to Eroica... but the old Colnago is still my "classic".

The concept of applying rules to old bikes isn't generally to my liking. Bikes are about freedom from the judgement of daily life. When I ride the old bike it is to escape the conformity of the CF Di2 bib wearing juggernaut that buys as told. Not to mention, riding a C&V bike is about the ride and not just the speed of the ride. Uninhibited bliss.

I get the need for rules when it comes to a strictly vintage event and would conform, I suppose, if I had the bankroll to attend those rides that require such rules.

All seven bikes I consider part of my "collection" would qualify.

Note also that there is no absolute year cutoff. Bianchi is going to produce a lugged steel L'Eroica bike with 10sp cassette and Dia-Compe ENE downtube shifters and crankset, which has been blessed by the Eroica folks. Kyle Brooks wrote a bit about a prototype on his Retrogrouch blog:

Two of my bikes are ideal L'Eroica builds, and both are French. Ironically, my Simoncini would probably not pass inspections due to cantilever brakes! My Serotta would pass but fitting anything larger than a 700x28 is tight.

The PX10 will fit a 700x30 tire easily and fits many 700x32. It's currently fitted with 700x32 Compass Stampede Pass clinchers.

To help with the hills, I've updated a Stronglight 93 crankset with a Red Clover Triplitizer. The chainrings are now 46, 42 & 30 which will provide a half step and a granny gearing if I use a 13-15-17-20-23-26 freewheel which is ready to install. I'll use this wheelset most of the time.

I'm not a masher and like to sit and spin at a 90 to 105 rpm cadence. The Red Clover triplitizer with the 46, 42 and 30 chainrings covers the 10 to 25 mph range with tight gear spacing. It also allows me to use a short cage rear derailleur with a triple. A 46 chainring is ideal for me. I can hold almost 30 mph on a 46 chainring chainring with a 13 cog on the freewheel. I won't be walking too many hills with that 30t granny gear, either.

An NOS Simplex rear derailleur and a NOS Suntour front derailleur were installed. A Dura ace set of shifters were added along with a very nice Huret cable guide.

A OE PX10 wheelset arrived with Peugeot branded (Mallaird made) hubs and Super Champion sew-up rims. A 14-15-17-19-21 five speed freewheel is mounted. This wheelset will be restored and once new tires are glued on, will be ridden on special days.









My recently acquired '77 Grand Record

The bike is all original. Every component (except the saddle and bar tape) matches the 1977 Motobecane catalog, including the Michelin Elan tires. The owner said he might have used the bike all of 200 miles and the lack of use is obvious.

It's going to need a tear-down and deep cleaning. There is some corrosion from storage in a basement, but it looks superficial. The seatpost came out without effort and I'm not finding any serious rust or other problems.

I finally have a stock bike from this era that fits me, and I'll keep it all original.

Two out of three of my Bikes would pass inspection. I would have to put the Campagnolo pedals back on my Paramount though. (oh my aching feet). Why do they have to mess with pedal selection?

Robbie, your taste in rides are impeccable, and the same goes for the beautiful condition of them. Not sure you'd like something with lots of patina and crusty shifting.

Disregard for a moment the break-off year in considering L'eroica legal. If you really plan on riding the gravel of L'Eroica specific events, well then of course follow the spirit of it.

I'll leave ldmataya to share what he has, but it would knock your socks off seeing his Bottecchia. IT IS so right in every way. Shows like a 246 Dino at Pebble Beach. Tidy HOT Italian that oozes character.

Actually, I would have to swap out the pedals on my bikes. I have been collecting quill pedals though, in anticipation of making the switch (at least partially) one of these days.

I scored a deal on this '85 vintage frameset. I was going to build it with Super Record but then decided everyone does that...and when I found a NOS Zeus New Racer group I had the answer.

Steve- Could simply use the toe-clips sans straps. Works great for large shoe size.

This 1982 Peugeot PXN10 would pass all inspection, too. (On the for-sale block, so won't make it to an event under me.)

You need to add the non-aero 32 spoke minimum wheelset to your list, too.

@RobbieTunes, I do believe you missed a restriction: must have caliper brakes. No cantis need apply.

But it's kinda funny... if you ask a kid (and I know kids! I've been a kid for over fifty years now!) to draw a bike, you'll get the most basic, plain, no frills bike. And to me, that's a bike with drop bar, down tube shifter, non-aero brake lever, and so on. Yes, if you want anatomical correctness, you're getting toe clips. My 1959 Allegro fits. My 1972 Fuji "the finest" fits. My 1974 Fuji "the ace" fits. Also an Astra... but also a couple fixies (no downtube shifters on those, though). No problem! But also no brainer, since these are all more or less original as they left the factory. But then my 1982 Trek 720, that I only just recently finished setting up for any touring I might be able to get in this summer, also fits. I put non-aero levers, downtube shifters, etc on it because that's what's normal. That's what works. That's what I want. That's what makes a bike a good usefu ridable bike.

L'eroica sounds like fun but I don't think I'll be making that splurge anytime soon, but yeah, I have a bike for that.

I want to be clear, I'm not setting any rules. But, I am anticipating some.
At present, I have sold the two bikes I had that qualify, a '79 Semi Pro and an '85 Lotus Classique.

Can someone post a link to the actual L'Eroica rules? Just curious.

One thing that jumped out at me at the Dairyland Dare was that the vintage bikes ridden were overwhelmingly disadvantaged in gearing, yet their riders, like crank_addict, ldmataya, Chrome Molly, and smontanaro, took it in stride and just rode. I may have omitted some, as far as the limited gearing goes, but the only grumbling I overheard about vintage bikes was one tri-bike guy to another, "that grey-haired guy on the old bike went right by you, and he's was running something like a 5-sp crit cluster." When I got to the top of that hill, I realized ldmataya and Chrome Molly were at least one of the culprits.
