I thought this level of ridiculous was reserved for eBay and Craigslist. It would seem Campagnolo and Amazon have teamed up to compete for the crown of insanity. These things must be crafted from unborn panda pelts...

Not Amazon at all. It's a 3rd-party or Marketplace seller, who sets their own prices independently of Amazon. They simply use Amazon as a storefront.

Oh, and the super high priced fixed-price auctions on eBay are most often when sellers are out of stock, but don't want to take down the listing then have to pay to relist when the item comes back in stock. It's lazy but effective inventory management.

Sure, but nobody points a finger at eBay or Craigslist when someone lists an item with an absurd price. Amazon is unique among those in that they themselves are the biggest provider-- the others are just storefronts, and individual users take care of all of the product.

Amazon fulfilled products most often still stay firmly in the loss-leader area-- you (an individual) cannot sell a box of rocks for $5 when Amazon is selling it for $5, while they're also eating the cost of logistics, shipping, manpower, etc, etc. Amazon probably loses $1 selling that box of rocks. They pick up profits elsewhere, just like every other massive retailer.

I see that there is "only one left in stock" on those brake pads. Might some dynamic pricing algorithm be at work? I see that all the time with books.
