@AzDzrtRat, If there is no model number on the frame, the frame was sold as a frame set. Looks good.

@sdn40, The important aspect is that it was a father-daughter project, IMHO. Nice job.

Thanks. Much appreciated.
I'm fine with the look of the vinyl decals, it's the thickness that bugs me. Anything with an edge will get caught on something sooner or later, and as is the case with fine lettering, there isn't much holding them on to begin with. Time will tell and it's certainly nothing to get ocd about as they all can be removed very easily. The price was right too. All the talk about decals over powder coat, along with the price and color options, this works fine for now

Here's my ST500 under a tour load. It was the first or second Cannondale bike bought in Michigan, fall 1983. This was on a tour around Lake Superior; it rode great and braked great even with ~75# of load and the NGC-500 sidepull brakes (or something like that; I carried a hatchet and Coleman single-mantle lantern, and the 502 stove you see there, among other conveniences. And a sony ICF sw20 shortwave radio; man those were the days'; good, clearly read news 24h on BBC World Service!). This photo was in 1990. I still have the bike, unridden since ~2004. Has a dent or two and the chain hanger & rear droupot eyelet inserts are loose, but have a few NOS parts in stash (incl the Superbe Tech mech) to one day get my old friend back in spec. A little more: https://rjl.us/velo/1983ST500.htm

Finished over the weekend and being delivered today- an '87 Black Lighting frame (courtesy of BF member Force) built with a mix of Dura Ace components: 7403 hubs laced to new Mavic Open Pro rims, 7403 brakes, 7800 FD and RD, 7900 down tube shifters, R600L brake levers (these were the default brake levers from 7700 onward), 7700 crankset, Shimano 6400 series aero seatpost, Selle Italia Q-Bik saddle, Sakae stem and Nitto bars. Ten speed double with an 11/28 cassette.
Obviously, he's a pretty tall dude, hence the custom build.

^^^^ Yeah, that's pretty much perfection right there.

I have that essentially exact setup on my Peloton. 7900 DT shifters, 7800 FD and RD and brake calipers, 770 crankset, R400 Super SLR brake levers (all black like some R600s). The best of vintage meets the best of modern (IMO, of course).

You and I both can ride a 63cm with ease. You must be around 6'5" (my height). I'm building up my 66cm SR800 again with nearly full 7400 bits, save for the brake levers (R600s). Can't wait to get it done!

Yeah, the guy I built it for is a tall one- maybe 6'4"? I'm more of a 5'9" kind of guy, ride a 57.

For now I freshened it up - parts swap and lots of touch up - it needs a repaint - maybe in the winter...

Beautiful SR300 @2morrow, I had a '91 model, another of these bikes I wish I had kept. that black paint with the slight irridescence to it was so nice looking, and that was the ultimate criterium weapon, on a tight budget.

After seeing the prices on new bikes and nearly having a heart attack, my research started. One thing lead to another and I found myself here. Hours and hours of browsing and I was hooked. Kudos to all that do this, I found out that while anyone can do it, it's not as easy as first thought. Things are not as compatible as I first thought. I know some purists will not feel the vibe, but this is the picture that I got in my head and had to see it through

Started off as a beat up 88 Cannondale Criterium. I had read about them and immediately got an image in my head. Flat black powder coat, rims off Craigslist and some other parts off ebay. Stumbled across the drilled crankset and had to have it as I think its the coolest thing. Followed suit on the brake levers. 9 speed Ultegra front and rear with DuraAce shifters. Got things pretty well where I wanted. The final product turned out pretty much as I pictured. I have to finish up the final details and will find out if she is for me. Searching for parts was fun, but I can say that once you have a brand new powder coat, you tend to be pretty picky and no matter what you do the budget ends up a bit higher than you thought. Not sure about vinyl decals. They give you flexibility but nothing like the waterslide. Good news is I can change them out whenever I want and even go another color scheme should the mood strike.

At the end of the day, I don't know what this bike is worth vs something new from a bike shop, but it was pretty cool to see it come to life and my daughter helped with some ideas and I could teach her a few life lessons about saving money and that her old man still knows a thing or two (with the backing of you guys of course). When I told her that I could build something just as good as new she was originally like yea yea sure dad and I think the final product shocked her so that's always a good thing. I'm still not as cool as Taylor Swift or One Direction though.
Excellent work and a beautiful result! These earlier aluminum frame / steel fork Cannondales ride so nicely. Tons of performance with a nice side of decent ride quality. I love the black and orange composition throughout. Spot on theme consistency!

I guess 1989 was a good year for me... picked up a 1989 SM500 for $40 in ruff shape - Last fall I broke the frame on my Fisher Montare, so I swapped most everything over. Managed to peel off the deadhead bears and save the head tube logo. This bike is going to my father-in-law.

My beautiful '89 SR800 out for a test ride. The 61cm top tube ended up being way too long--I prefer 57.5-59cm and the resulting saddle-to-hoods reach--and thus the parts were transferred to another bike. Too bad about this as it wears full 7400-era Dura Ace, MA40 rims with tan wall tires, and white tape+saddle all so very well. Good ride, too.

I'm a total noob here, so far just gathering info... I just picked up a 27" ST600 (I'm 6'7") and want to do restore it with nice components like you've done with this Black Lightning. With these restored Cannondales are you converting them to 700 wheels and tires?

Don- Welcome to the forum.

SR frames like that Black Lightning had 700c wheels when new, so no conversion is necessary.

However, ST frames like your new one were originally equipped with 27" wheels. To convert to a 700c wheelset, which I highly reccommend, buy a pair of Tektro 539 brakes. They come in polished silver or black (choose your favorite) and nutted or recessed mount. Easiest to use the nutted style, even though they are harder to find. Recessed style requires that you drill out the rear brake bridge and fork to accept the larger recessed nuts, which is not a big deal but should be mentioned.

Other than that, those ST frames will accept literally any groupset from 5 to 11 speed, any style of shift lever including STI/Ergo, etc. as long as you use a BSA threaded bottom bracket.

Have fun!

Wow, I had no idea that this thread existed!

Figure I'll throw up a picture of the '87 SR400 (w/ custom graphics!) build that I am working on now. Its my first true build (have previously only done basic maintenance and replacing of broken parts), and I'm learning a ton along the way.

I have always wanted a mint green/celeste colored bike, but have had a soft spot in my heart for the old/clean-graphic'd Cannondales, so the '87 was a no brainer when I stumbled upon it. Here she is in her original state from the day I picked her up, but I'll post pictures once the build is completed, as well.

Thanks for the info. I guess that means I can then ditch the freewheel rear cluster and go with a cassette freehub then?

Yes. That is both possible and reccommended. A 130 hub will fit without cold setting (actually, you can't cold set aluminum), just use your thumbs to spread the drops the teeny 2mm per side. Going to a freehub opens up a whole world O' possibilities in terms of groupsets and gearing options.

1998 is almost 20 years old right? I sold this CAAD3 R800 when I started riding Steel but it was my foray back into biking in 2000 and I put a ton of miles on it, three STP's including once in one day, this version was updated from stock which came with a quill stem and sensible 32 spoke wheels. Only took me 8 years to figure out that I had been riding a too small (54cm) bike and that my new steel Handsome Devil (57cm) felt alot more comfortable.

This is the 27" 1987 ST600 I recently bought. These are the pics the seller had on eBay. He didn't want to be bothered with shipping something big, so advertised it as local pickup only, but it never sold. I contacted him and we worked out an offline sale, he agreed to box it up, and I used Bike Flights to arrange the pickup and shipping from Illinois to Pennsylvania.

At 6'7" tall with long legs, there are few options for a reasonably priced new bike that would fit. So my plan is to do a restoration using modern components, and use the bike for solo and group rides in Central Pennsylvania. I'm not crazy about the Slate color, nor the other 1987 color which was lavender, so I'm thinking about going with red. With the wealth of information found in this and other CV threads, I feel like I have access to many experts, so thanks to all for sharing your knowledge.

Don

That 27" ST is a rare bird in any color. Good news is you can now have it painted or powder coated in the color of your choice, put on new decals from Vintage Cannondale, and use pretty much any groupset you desire. Tektro 539 brakes (they're even available in a nutted version) make the conversion from 27" to 700c easy-peasy.

I'd suggest avoiding Shimano 5800, however. The combination of wide chainstays and the clamping FD from that series does not result in a happy shifting bike. 5800 works great on SR's with a braze on FD, just not the ST. But virtually anything else from the Shimano lineup works perfectly!
