See, that's what I'm talking about. The kind of expertise and experience on this forum is so valuable! I might very well have sprung for that particular group set without knowing there is a difference. Thanks for the tip!

I'd suggest avoiding Shimano 5800, however. The combination of wide chainstays and the clamping FD from that series does not result in a happy shifting bike. 5800 works great on SR's with a braze on FD, just not the ST. But virtually anything else from the Shimano lineup works perfectly!

So many beautiful Cannondale rebuilds! Who has a run hard and put away wet Conny? I got mine in Boston, with shot wheels old hoods and tape and so many chips in the paint! I taped the grip Qatar where it was tearing and reused it, and cleaned the hoods best I could. The current wheels are from a mongoose hybrid I pulled from the trash, (still have some pink spray paint on them) the saddle was a $15 take off from the cheap saddle bin at the LBS, first white, now Pink from my riding in the rain with red shorts! Matches the spokes though!!

I'll do a rebuild this winter, needs a full brake set up, the levers and cantis are dying. The rims are wearing from wet weather commuting, and some rust on the fork needs attention.

It doesn't look like it, but I LOVE this old war horse! Super comfortable, and fast as hot grease. Definitely worthy of an overhaul.

@dhager, The larger STs make for a great looking run-a-bout for the taller rider and as mentioned, update very easily. Congrats on your find.

thanks to a fellow forum member, finally scored a "66cm" Criterium to match my Track. Both share the mega downtubes and both measure closer to a traditional 63.

showing the downtubes much wider than the headtube

Man, is there anything more 1990 than hot-pink graphics on a black frame?

Oh and that splatter (or crackle or whatever paint job) reminds me of the glorious jeans of that time. Just my size too...

My ST 1000 is a very capable bike for multi functions. Very comfortable and stable yet agile and quick, it really holds the line on fast turns just as good as a racing bike. I set it up with 700 x 32 Gatorskins that are a bit heavy and slow, just a tire change away from having a speed demon.

This is exactly what the guy I bought my ST600 from said. Long before he passed it on to me, he mentioned it was his club rides road bike, with lighter wheels and tires. He was a long, tall, powerful rider BITD, and he liked the long, tall, stiff frame of the 600 over any steel bike he could find in his size.

In my hands, it's gotten converted back into a workhorse:

I'll tidy it up one of these days, but now it's just for riding and hauling stuff.

Does your front brake pad touch the tire, or is that just a matter of me not being able to correctly judge 3 dimensional perspective?
