Isn't that slate/anthracite grey just the best? I liked how Cannondale kept it exclusive to their top tourer.

Yes! I totally agree. I wish I had the color matched front & rear racks, as well as the 3 water bottle cages.

@mkeller234, I like your ST a lot. What year is your ST? I have an '85 ST 400. I picked up the bike on CL last year and fixed it up. I'm running it with 700c wheels (and 700 by 32c tires). I really like the bike. I'm currently running it with a compact double but I plan on installing a triple crank and using bar end shifters or perhaps brifters. I like how the bike rides and it may be my favorite long distance machine.

When I am choosing a bike for a ride, they all have different qualities, components and comfort levels that make each better or worse for a given task.

My Cannondale ST has a long wheel base and steel fork. I would like to try one of the more radical shorter wheel base, cantilevered dropout frame Cannondale frames some day too.

Can you help educate me please? What makes it a touring model? Is it the triple chain ring?
Thanks...

1. Longer wheelbase. Notice the gap between rear wheel and seat tube
2. Rack mount on seat stays
3. Eyelets on dropouts
4. Brake bosses on stays & forks, instead of regular caliper brakes.

Mine has cantilever brakes and the bosses for them front and back where this one does not. Is it still an ST400?

I think the later models had canti brakes. They are much better for touring in my opinion. Found this article that shows one like that. Probably a 90 model.

Later and higher end models did have canti brakes. Cannondale trickled them in starting in the late '80s and then brought it down through the whole line (my '90 ST400 has them). Low-rider bosses were present right away, though excluded on a model here and there (don't know why). You can use them for touring for sure, but if you need a bike that still has to accelerate or work out of the saddle, these behave like a race bike--no whippy-ness or slop.

Vintage brochures are always your friend if you want more info.

Is that the custom "Redrum" colorway? That's some intense paint, must be DuPont Emron.

Beautiful colors and composition! The black seat post, stem, bars, brake levers, and rims really add depth and substance to it visually, IMO.

Thanks. Super happy with the way this one rides AND looks. Browsing the Klein thread I'm surprised how similar the two bikes look, especially the Performance.

Thank you, I like it a lot too! It’s an 83 AA frame, about as early as it gets for them. I’ve ridden it to work a lot, but haven’t taken it out for a long ride yet. It’s defin a different animal compared to my steel bikes. That’s a nice ST you have too. I think the simple decals from these early years are the best.

They do look similar, though to me, vintage for vintage, Cannondales have always been better proportioned in both their touring and road offerings. It's subtle, but unmistakable. Enjoy your ST!

I totally agree, on the early decals. 👍 And what are you waiting for, to go on a longish ride? These early ones just grow on ya more, after a few hundred miles. 😁 Another cool thing about my '85 frame, with the CC serial number, is that those are my initials. 😎 Still haven't found the welder's initials though, might be buried under the paint. These letters & numbers are noticeably smaller than any later ones I've seen. 🤔

Oh, lots of things keep me from it. I have two kids, 7 and 2. Any longer bike ride will likely include one or both kids. My daughter has one of those tag a long bikes and it is currently hooked up to my mountain bike. I did put the attachment on my Cannondale but quickly took it off because of the downtube shifters (and it’s so ugly!). At this point, I’ve used my Lotus Eclair or my Mt Fuji for long rides on a crushed limestone path. The Cannondale is too pretty for that treatment. I want to keep it on pavement if I can help it.

Fair enough then, sir, kids have priority, even over a 'dale. 😁👍 I never had kids myself, so often seem kinda brain dead, to the folks who do. 🙄😉
