With a bit of work, you could cut a shaft drive.

But, then if you couldn't find a multi-speed hub, you'd be stuck with single speed.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is an industrial 1/2 x 1/8" chain, or 1/2 x 3/32" chain, somewhere that is still made in the USA, although many of the industrial chains I'm finding seem to be wider.
