Very nice collection! Is the rear derailleur on the Superior original? If so then it may be a '77, which was also the only year the "Super-Lite" decal was applied to the seat mast. What is the 4-digit number stamped on the headbadge?

Beautiful bikes, I just sold a 72 Super Sport. I kept the Brooks for my Trek.

Sweet Collection! :thumb:

A red Superior followed me home yesterday. Needs a good cleaning but looks great.

2606

Which...as I understand it means the 260th bike of 1976...or am I wrong?

Cool...I am wanting to find one of the Pink ones...very rare! Had a line on one in Maine, but turned out to be just too small...so had to pass...or...would take an orange one...but...for now, the black is cool...

No comments (at least yet) on the pink highlight??? :-)

Very interesting. That badge number does indicate a bike built on Thursday Sept. 16th, 1976. From what I know so far however the "Super-Lite" seat tube decal only came on '77 models and the VGT-Luxe derailleur on '77-'78 models, which if correct may indicate something was changed. Unfortunately I don't have any other late '76 Superior models documented to be sure either way, so it is possible they introduced those changes on or before the day your bike was built.

True, the "Flamingo" colored Superiors were only made during the first half of '77. Flamingo was replaced by Sky Blue on the Superior for all production after June 30th that year. They produced a 2nd edition catalog after that date showing the change:

Now, of course, I have to find a Sport Limited...everyone wish me luck!

Sigh... I've got to get back to my Superior project.

sailorbenjamin 09-20-15 09:13 AM

What kind of saddle is on that green one?

You ARE in luck, you can buy mine for a very reasonable cost :) ..of course it needs a lot of TLC but what collector doesn't love a challenge? AND it's pretty nearly ALL THERE as in STOCK equipt.
So shoot me a PM and we can reach a deal.
There's a old thread in which my Sport Limited was discussed, ID'd and assessed my metacortex who was a great help (except he didn't buy it!) I'll try to find that link...

Darth Lefty 09-20-15 12:47 PM

I enjoyed my Super Sport but it's been benched lately in favor of something more modern with wider gears, and it might get sold.

That's the old thread alright, thanks for finding it.
Hope daf1009 needs a 22" project and will give this old girl a new home...

Here is my 1977 Flamingo Superior (named Lorelei). This weekend I was hit head-on by an extremely careless cyclist and my front wheel is toast. If anyone has a spare Araya, whole wheel or just rim, I would love to buy it. FYI, I did make about 250 of the 275 miles on her, outpacing a bunch of much younger riders on their new-fangled carbon fiber bikes...so yea for the Chrome Moly classics! I would have finished easily had I not had my bike damaged and been sent to the ER.

Pictures from shortly before the tragedy:

Hope you are OK! Note that your Superior came with Weinmann rims with a hooked bead, which were used by Schwinn in late '74 and later on the Sports Tourer and Superior.

Super awesome bikes!

I've always loved fillet brazed frames- I love that look of the tubes flowing into each other.

Thanks for posting them.

Do those Huret ratcheting shifters have a really fine, "micro-ratchet" feel to them? Like finer ratchets than the typical Suntour ratcheting shifter?

I have a set of Sachs/Huret ratcheting shifters- those are awesome- they're shaped differently- but the action is impeccable.

The shifters used on the '76-'78 Superiors had a patented "retro-friction" clutch design, with a ball-detent adding a "ratchet" feel. They were discussed in more detail here: http://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...ion-model.html
