Was always curious to ride the Splugen Pass on a bike:
Passo dello Spluga I went by car on a vacation returning from Lake Como to Switzerland. Was a definate highlight of the trip. The Italian side is epic (and are most of these pics). Better have some low gearing for this one. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=478766 |

Lake Como gets many positive comments from visitors.
We have been there twice in the last decade. Well worth it, but bring your credit card. |
In 1986, my brother and I loaded my Trooper and headed north for several days to Lynn Lake, Manitoba, eventually heading all the way to Reindeer Lake.
North of Lake Winnepeg, the road was "all weather" highway which means gravel. This was one of the most rugged, picturesque places I have ever visited on this planet. We ended up putting on almost 2,800 miles of driving on this adventure and the imagery is forever burned into my mind. It's my hope and dream to recreate this journey on all road bikes before I get too ancient. An example of the roads. http://www.thomas-prade.de/kanada/pa...toba/TN_18.JPG An example of the fishing. We caught over three hundred northerns while we were there, over 15 of them this large. http://bearhunt.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/007.jpg I would take something like this Routt 45 there or maybe my Fargo. http://moots.com/wp-content/uploads/Routt-45-90.jpg |
I'd like to ride Mérida to southern Belize. And back. Credit card style, with my wife driving the support vehicle.

Just moved into the Portland area last year. After 30 years of riding in the Bay Area, I think I sucked the marrow out of that bone. Now I'm hungry for what the PNW has to offer. I'm off on a tour next week, starting in Seattle, through Cle Elum, backside of the Cascades, wiggle back between Rainier and St. Helens, then back to Portland.
When I'm ready for more, I might contact you for recommendations!

The l'Eroica event, however, adds something else: the ability to experience some of that mid-20th-century Giro d'Italia atmosphere. If you're romantically inclined, it's easy to let your imagination get the better of you and feel like Gino Bartali as Italian ladies in 1940's outfits are cheering you on.

I am retiring at the end of this year and I have a list but no firm plans yet.
D2R2 or some variant of this, Daryland Dare, Riding the Badlands / Blackhills, some riding in Colorado with my son, Southern Utah, doing a California Triple Crown are all possibilities in the near future. |

That's why I'd like to do La Mitica or La Polverosa. Same atmosphere, one tenth the crowd. Win win.

I'm really jealous of all the double track, fire trails, and rail trails that exist all up and down the West Coast. I'd really like to experience some of that.

As the poet put it, I'm getting bugged riding up and down the same old strip. As for finding a new place where the kids are hip.... well, all of that, what you guys have posted, looks pretty good to me. I'd be pretty happy to get out and ride any of them. Pacific Northwest? Sure! Montana? Okay! Scotland? Count me in! Add Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, the Gaspe Peninsula, the Iditarod trail, the Australian outback, whatever. I'm easy to please.
One thing I always fantasized about was riding all the way around the Mediterranean Sea. When I first conceived this idea, the political situation made it pretty impossible to consider actually doing it, but I figured it would get better before I had the time and money to do the thing anyway. Well, I still don't have the time and the money, and the political situation has gotten unbelievably worse. Pretty sure I won't be trying that one any time soon. |
Not mine. I just came across this blog and made me think of this thread. This guy took six months to travel from Belgium to Kyrgyzstan through the Alps and along the silk road.

Brevet series culminating with PBP.
I will NEVER have the time, money, or enough fire in the belly to even train for this, but it's nice to think about. Top |

Lake Maggiore. Ever since I picked up a travel book on the Italian Lakes. Circumnavigation has you ending up in Switzerland as well as Italy.

Crossing the US has been a pipe dream of mine for years but it is doubtful I'll have the time or spousal buy in to do it in one outing or even in sections.
On the realistic side I also want to explore more rail trails like the GAP/C&O and Katy trails. Other possibilities are Route Verte in Quebec or hub and spoke routes in the Pacific NW. I would also like to do the Selkirk loop and the Icefields parkway has been on my bucket list for a long time. I've been fortunate to check the Oregon coast (2x), Crater Lake loop, Hiawatha/Coeur d'Alene and Michelson trails, and Going to the Sun highway off of my list but they only have left me drooling for more............. I need to do some serious planning since my window of opportunity is shrinking and before too long I may be stuck in a chair staring off into space with drool dripping off my chin :-) |
