Thoughts on new Sturmey Archer SRF3 3-speed hub versus vintage S-A AW?

I'm rebuilding a 1969 Raleigh Robin Hood and would like to use new alloy rims. I'm debating building the wheels around a vintage Sturmey Archer AW hub or ordering the wheels prebuilt with a new Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub, the model without the coaster brake. I haven't ridden a bike with the new hub. I like the ride of the old AW. My hesitation about using the old one is that it is untested. Are the new Sturmey Archer hubs nice? Would I have to file the dropouts to make the new hub work? Is there a way to test the old AW if it's not assembled into a wheel? Thanks in advance for any advice.
