So, this happened. I think I'll stick with my baggy shorts.

I kind of like them when on the bike but I'm even less likely to wear them in a restaurant than with revealing ride wear as they said.

I was up at the "un-meeting", he wore them both days. I wear shorts over cycling shorts:

I got the idea from a guy on the CGOAB site. Nice to be able to walk into a bar and grill and not look to much like an alien.

I bought a pair of knickers at rei last winter. I wear them a lot when the temps are between 40ish and 60. They do a nice job keeping the knees warm. I like them enough to get another pair, but not enough to spend $130 on those.

For or the record, I don't wear road kits.

As a big guy cyclist, let me just say, the prejudice directed towards us at times borders on criminal. He could at least make them true to size or label them with the true size (he is making them after all and not importing them from someone else), and say a polite; Wish we could offer them in more sizes, but it would break our bank to do so." Instead, what he is saying; "If you have a 36" waist, you are too fat for my knickers!"

The Compass knickers are available in five sizes between 28″ and 36″, in two colors. They fit slim and are adjustable, so order a size up if unsure, especially if you will wear padded shorts underneath them.
I'd really consider buying a pair, even at his custom made price.

Any other 35" and larger waist C&V cyclists feel the same way? Ever get bummed when you find that an "XXL" marked jersey should really be marked "M"?

I don't own cycling specific clothing, but I can tell you that nothing gets me riled up like "runs small." If it runs small it isn't an XL, its a L.

I hear you Bob.

I'm a "painful" 36" as my wife calls it.

My weight keeps going down at a rate of 2lbs per week and at this rate I could ride comfortably in these knickers next summer without concern.

In the meantime, I usually ride in my mtb baggies and an old plaid shirt.

I'm starting to fit into all of my old wool jerseys though and that's a great feeling.

I have a pair of the MUSA knickers and a pair of Chrome knickers, both great for fall weather in the northeast.

+ 1. Those knickers are an expensive fashion statement.

You cannot wear these knickers unless you ride 26 inch wheels and have a Berthoud handlebar bag with a Decaleur.
I forgot the fenders......
Maybe Compass is just trying to be up to date with the trends...

Yes, they are nice.

Many of the guys I ride with have Chrome knickers as well.

I like the look of the LGs as well.

I've been wearing knickers to ride in Spring and Autumn weather for maybe the last three or four years or so. I've got two pair from different companies that I bought because I was curious. Both pair knock back the wind nicely and to be honest are really comfortable for riding on days that require a light wool sweater or a long sleeve pullover. Honestly, it's pretty much like wearing baggy shorts or mtn bike shorts in the hot months: something reasonably less revealing than skin tight Lycra duds, and much more reasonably comfortable both on and off the bike. I seldom ride with bike shorts underneath, so if I want to get off the bike and have lunch or go hiking or whatever I don't feel like I'm wearing a diaper. I don't really see them as a fashion statement at all - if anything, they're a little dorky looking...but then so am I, so I don't mind. I'm not dropping 130 clams on a pair though - an occasional Google search (not to mention checking Sierra Trading Post) brings up clearance and sale prices that are a whole lot more palatable to my skinflint wallet.

Yeah, the price is fairly precious, but these look decent at $50.

Yea, At 6'5" and 260, I understand very well. Some slightly smaller friends have done quite well by buying kits from me that did not fit!

To be fair, BQ did have an article (well, more of a blurb, really) in the Spring 2008 issue regarding just that.

As for the sizing issue, I don't think there's any great conspiracy against fat people. It's just that cyclists as a whole tend to be thinner than the average american. In fact, if you read down in the comment section, they mention that they plan on offering larger sizes. Of course, you could always ride more...

some years back, such length legwear became popular in golf, harkening back to an earlier time. in the states, folks referred to them as 'knickers' while our UK counterparts snickered and advised us that knickers are ladies underwear. The proper name for such leggings in their lexicon was 'plus fours.' I don't know if that dichotomy exists in the cycling word as well.

I'm too old to be fashionable. But I bought a pair of Ibex and Swobo wool knickers a decade ago. So don't call it a comeback, I have been here for years.

And I hate this slim fit bull****. I have to buy pants 2 sizes too big so the thighs fit and then I take in the waist.

While not cycling clothing, these wool knickers look like they would be reasonably good for cold weather riding. Good price as well.

Here's a pic of me from a few year's back, mixing old and new technology (that's my '49 Raleigh Clubman behind me). I'm wearing Bicycle Fixation knickers, and I wore them yesterday for an old Brit bike ride with my old Brit bike group. Seems fitting.

O man... "spirited". He actually says "spirited".

I'm on my second pair of these, after the after the first pair got a little big. They're cheap and wear well. They're light, keep some wind off me, and I don't feel like a weirdo off the bike.
