Cool brakes on Ebay

Not mine, but I thought the aficionados of Dura-Ace AX might want to look at these:
Vintage Shimano Dura Ace AX BR 7300 Brake Set Front Rear Caliper Road Bike | eBay

Worn pads? So what! They don't stop worth diddly when new anyway!

Was that Shimanos attempt to compete with the Campy Delta brakes? Looks like a fancy version of roller cam brakes.

They are pre delta by 10 years or so.
But the design goes back 40-50 years I think, judging by some old photos I saw recently.

As I was not so thrilled to discover when I installed my pair. Oh well, they look cool on the shelf.

The 7300 group was bold idea that at least broke the tradition that Campy had all the answers. It still was a dog.........

Shimano Parapull. Had a guy with those on his bike want fenders installed. Just try using a fourth hand tool to pull the cable for a brake adjustment.

There were a number of similar designs in the pre-war era such as the Philco ones.

Those look pretty enough to put on display - anywhere but a bike

I saw something similar on a Huffy Aerowind locked up on Wacker Drive in the Chicago Loop last week. They looked like the brakes in this blog post:

Ben?s Huffy Aerowind | Old Ten Speed Gallery

Were those lower end "aero" brakes from Shimano?

Got a set on my Masi for now. They look neat, but are about as useless as a fart in a noisemaker for stopping.
They're scary weak, even with brand-new pads (which are much, much smaller than modern pads) installed.

Were these part of Shimano's Dura Ace AX group in the year that aero was all the rage? Something like 1982.

I blush at your kind compliment poprad, thank you. Click here for the full story and more pics of my wild-eyed, cherub-cheeked child-bride Masi.

And according to Wikipedia, this group was released in 1980.

Maybe this was the first group with the oversized pedal spindles too? Another winner.

Shimano AX was good enough to win at the 1984 Olympics with Alexi Grewal as pilot.

More proof it's the motor, not the machine. Damn, Alexi anyway, he beat Steve Bauer (Mr 2nd place)

It may have been 'The Program'.

Yeah, the same one Eddy Planckeart was on in the '90 Paris Roubaix. I still think Bauer hit the line first and Eddy copped to "The Program" years later. Still, I'm sure everyone knew the secret handshake (milkshake?) back then.

Yes. Shimano had a whole bunch of "AX" components back then- Dura-Ace AX, 600AX, Adamas AX. They sure were purty.

Read all about them in the Shimano 1982 Dealer Catalogue

In addition to apparently not braking as well, from the looks of it they seem to be bigger and therefore heavier than their regular side pull counterpart. Anybody have any figures on the weight of these brakes vs. similar era brakes?
