$60 Bianchi 80s, Seek info, tips

Hi,

I snagged this Bianchi road bike for $60 from Kijiji (like CL). Looking for any insights from the forum's knowledge-keepers! I've uploaded a few pics here on the forum, including serial number, but here's a link to a folder full of images (Google Drive)

Couple of practical puzzles:

1) Check out the pic of the seat post binder bolt. Must have had a difference of opinion with former rider and got 'all bent out of shape'. Where can I source this? Note little tab under the binder bolt head.

2) The headset: I removed the lockring, but look at the notched adjustable ring. Tool? I tried some light-medium taps with large screwdriver, no luck. Need proper tool.

3) Any idea of year for this Bianchi? I'm going to guess 1984.

4) Any idea of model? There were no decals on the frame indicating a model name, only "Bianchi" and "Edoardo" on the head tube.

5) Thinking I'll stick with 27" wheels. Rims in good shape and cleaning up nicely (polished alloy)

6) Freewheel (thinking of going to 7-speed freewheel, but opinion on spreading dropouts to 130mm, going to 8-speed freehub)?

- i always replace those big, clunky seatpost bolts with chromoly ones from my lbs. they're like $2.50. you can also find them on ebay for a few dollars more.

- i've had good luck loosening those notched headset lock nuts using two tools together, a bb spanner and a rubber handled wrench to make the spanner fit. try tightening the adjustable cup slightly before attempting to loosen that nut. else, just take it to a shop where you know works on c&v bikes.

- i prefer 6-speed freewheels with 8-speed chains rather than 7-speeds and 9s chains. they're less cumbersome and shift easier/quieter for the kind of riding i do. i like sunrace and ird freewheels.

Thanks eschlwc. Good tips. I'll follow up on the chomoly seatpost bolt suggestion and probably, too, sticking with 6-speed freewheel. I'll have to give your workaround on the notched headset ring some creative thought. The bit about tightening first is endorsed by the guy who wrote the Rusty Nut Bible! Actually, if it can be done, try to slow rock it, tighten-loosen-tighten-loosen and so forth.

Congrats, you have a BICI II. This was an entry level bike, made in Japan. Probably Tange tubing. I have the same frame. I think it might be a little later than 1984, the ones I've seen from that era had a Suntour ARX derailleur, so I'm thinking you might be more 85/86 ish.

For $60, you've got a nice project.

Haha! Thanks to you, JamesRL, telling me it's a BICI II model, I can now do a little more research. It surprises me to learn it might be 85/86ish, wondering when the company in particular, or the industry in general, finally let go of the 27" wheel standard.
