Winter Bike Projects

Tallying up the winter bike projects today and I see there is a complete rebuild of the following bikes:

Fuji S12S mixte bike for the wife or my collection,
1982 Carlton built Competition GS, first race bike,
Schwinn High Sierra for the brother in law,
Diamondback hybrid for wife's niece.

Bikes to sell:

Fuji Touring Series V,
Specialized Allez Sport steel frame.

Should be a fun winter.

Nice list.

I have a Fuji Royale II
Schwinn Super Le Tour
Raleigh Grand Sports

My autum project is quickly becoming my winter project. The car got jealous recently and demanded some 'attention' ($$$).

Chombi 10-22-15 06:53 PM

If I land the job I just interviewed for this week, I might be finally able to afford to have my Medici Aerodynamic frameset refinished professionally, then hopefully complete the build this winter.....
It's been waiting so long to be finished. Something maybe close to three years now......

Henry III 10-22-15 09:18 PM

I've got my frame I'm building now that's 75% done and my wife wants me to build her a mixte frame next and she said she'd pay for the tubing and everything. How can I say no? I also have the pre Black Lightning frame getting the fork repainted and a few parts that'll be going onto it but that's a not even on the radar of being done anytime soon.

gugie 10-22-15 10:05 PM

Raleigh International 650b conversion, out for paint
Fuji "The Finest" 650b conversion, a few minor tweaks and then it's done
early 50's Rochet, partial or full restoration. A little at a time, no hurry, I want to get this right.
60's or early 70's Rochet mixte, maybe just rebuild the wheels, or full upgrade and repaint?

After that, a few others, we'll see.

This kills me!

I bought a winter project bike in early spring.... it, and another bike are already complete. Then I recently saw a Cannondale (in like-new condition) on Craigslist, that I just had to have. So now I am at N+2 and holding off on selling anything till spring... to get a decent price. I'll mount a bike in the trainer for the winter so I'll be OK for storage space.

So now.... I have nothing to wrench on during the upcoming Midwestern winter. And no place to put a project bike if I found one. I'll just have to hang-out more at the bike co-op.

Claud Butler - Black Diamond - Touring / commuter

Going to get a tear down to just the frame, acid bath and then a rebuild with upgrades.

calamarichris 10-23-15 01:51 AM

Have been working out the details with Velocals to get my custom decals made for this RobbieTune-wannabemobile. (1987 Centurion Ironman Expert.)

Motorcycled all the way up to Salt Lake for the frame and bought it from its mal-fitting owner.

http://www.calamarichris.com/wp-cont...a-1024x768.jpg

I don't have room for any more bikes, and I can't part with any of my current bikes, so this is My Last Build Maybe Ever; so not rushing anything, but I do have a complete group of Ultegra 6400 Tricolor with brifters still in the boxes. (Even a brand new 6400 Tricolor crankset still in the box from my beloved GF.)

Just waiting on the decals before taking the frame to Cyclart. Not rushing it, just enjoying the process (and my other bikes). Only things left on the list are the Phil Wood bottom bracket and some kind of wheels. Before this bike, I never realized how few non-white bikes I have.

http://www.calamarichris.com/wp-cont...r-1024x768.jpg

It's an Expert, but I'm having the correct color decals printed with "Master" instead, because I'm building it up with Ultegra.

Now that I've maxxed out on chassises, and I no longer have a geriatric dog to care for, maybe it's time to spend a little time on the engine. :)

I recently picked up a nice Raleigh Professional, It's just going to need a good cleaning, cables, tape, brake hoods and pads. Unfortunately, it is one size to small for me.

2 bike builds for me this winter. This is the first time wrenching on bikes for me.

1st build will be a complete tear down of my 88 Tempo, brifterizing it with 10 speed.
2nd build will be my '88 Prologue... going to build it tri-style with 10 speed stuff too.

Got most of everything I need for both. Also buying all the tools since I have no bike tools yet really. First I got to finish putting insulation in my attic, patching a big hole in the floor going to my old cellar into the laundry room, finish the electric... then build the bike stand.

At first I thought that was you in the picture and was about to point out that the bike was way too big for you.

Barrettscv 10-23-15 02:17 PM

I purchased the bike from the original owner in August. He had the sales receipt from 1977. From all appearances, he rode it less than 300 miles and parked in a dusty basement for almost 40 years.

This is just an initial cleaning before reassembly. The headset and BB have been overhauled at this point. It's a rider, and I'm pleased with the condition so far.

My 1993ish Pinarello Gavia frameset just arrive from Singapore;
The decals are like an onionskin! However, the paint and chrome are like new. Columbus TSX!

At first I thought the person in the picture was ME and I wondered why I sold a bike I've always wanted! Weird.

That is one beautiful frame. Wow.

devinfan 10-23-15 03:41 PM

Actually after seeing my doppleganger with a Miami Vice Ironman, that's going to be my next bike. My daughter just looked at the picture and said "Hi Daddy!" and waved at the picture LOL. Anyhow I want that frame, set up just like it is in the pic.

Thanks. It would have been one for the How-far-would-you-drive-for-a-frame? thread. I spent the better part of a Sunday behind the wheel to pick it up. But they don't come up for sale very often, let alone in my size. The paint's a little rough, though.

I've been thinking of doing a 650b conversion on my RB-1. Actually I'd love to do one but I'm skeptical it will work right given that the bottom bracket height is 267.

bikemig 10-23-15 03:57 PM

I've two vintage bikes that I've been working on and tweaking which I picked up this year: a 1992 trek 950 and a 1984 Trek 610. I overhauled both bikes and I've been riding them. I think that the 950 needs the VO crazy bars and the 610 needs bar end shifters.

Well it's a beautiful colour, anyway. To my eye that looks like the kind of powdery surface rust that will disappear with a little TLC.

Prowler 10-23-15 07:37 PM

I had one possibility: 1978 Schwinn LeTour III with the nice cooper/peach paint. My size too. But a lot of rust - FD, RD and pedals shot, brakes in tough shape and HS lock nut bad. The death blow though was the BB. Even if I got the crank arms off I could see the BB shells were not going to budge without killing all the threads. Why do folks just leave these things out in the rain so long?

So, in the morning, it starts its journey to the electric furnace. A few of the alloy parts are staying in the bins. Something else will show up.

PeregrineA1 10-26-15 09:09 PM

This one is on the stand and ready for a grease and cable clean-up. Probably save for my niece.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/zd...=w1233-h924-no
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CU...=w1233-h924-no
Then I have to clear this "inventory"...
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Gb...=w1233-h924-no
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/YM...=w1233-h924-no
So I can finish this
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/H7...=w1233-h924-no
And this
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/v6...=w1233-h924-no
....And/or these
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/U8...=w1233-h924-no
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/k3...Y=w694-h924-no
So, no shortage of projects. How much gets done remains to be seen. Driven by how much it rains in large part....
