I've acquired an Early Falcon

Bought it at auction for next to nothing. Will post more details when I can get out to my shed and open all the bags it's packed into as I have totalled stripped down the bike and sent it to be painted.

It is a single 44 tooth ring on the front and 5 on the back. I want to convert it to a double as well as swapping to square taper from the Williams cottered crank.

Has anyone got a picture of the cable routing.

Thanks

Kev

...I'm sorry, but I do not understand what you mean by a picture of the cable routing ?

In general, it depends upon the components on the bike and whatever braze ons might be present (if any). If it's old enough, there will be no braze-ons, so your cables route over clamp on frame guides and the rear brake cable is held to the TT by cable clips:

...older bike without braze-on fittings

...somewhat more recent one, with a full complement of brazed on cable fittings

It has no braze ons. It does have a guide on the chain side to guide the cable for the rear mech but not for the front mech.

Every pic I have come across shows the chainset side but I can't find a close up from the opposite side, that would show me how the routing for the front mech is done.

Hope that helps

Isn't that the bike that made the Kessel Run in only 12 parsecs? (Nevermind that a parsec is a unit of distance, and not time.)

My best friend (and the person who got me into cycling) had a blue one back in 1970...

Ten speed Falcon bikes of that era typically had cable stops on both sides of the bottom end of the down tube, and a corresponding stop on the chain strap for the rear mech. The front derailleur cable goes through the stop, then through a piece of housing to the derailleur. If you don't have the stop in question, the easy thing to do is run the cable under the bottom bracket.

Where are you located? I might be interested in your Williams crank.....

If the bike was intended to have a single chainring, that would explain no FD cable guide. On the other hand, some bikes, like my '73 Raleigh GS, had no front guide but came with a double crankset.

One easy way to do it is run the front derailleur cable under the bottom bracket using a small piece of housing (or just the liner) and obviate the need for a guide. Otherwise you will need a cable guide that clamps onto the downtube.

...yes, either this one, or sometimes you run into another sort that runs a short piece of housing between the guide and the front derailleur:

Here's the Google image search I pulled that from. Lots of different examples to look at. One will work for you.
