English Axle with French Cotters

My crank is French (Duprat) and my spindle is English (Phillips).
S. Brown says the English spindles are wider. Can I use the
standard French pin (9mm) for this, or can I have it filed?
(Looking for French-cottered axle might be tough).

If you can make it fit, it's fine! You will have to use French cotters; the English ones are fatter and won't fit in the holes. You may need to file them. If so, you have to file the flat part of the pin, obviously, and ideally you should file both pins the same way. To check the angles, place both pins together, threads pointing opposite directions. If the outer edges are parallel, the cotters are filed correctly.

The English spindle in the French crank arms may be a problem; but you'll see soon enough. I don't think it will be that hard to find a French spindle; a lot of people have "upgraded" old peugeots to cotterless cranks, and don't need the original spindle any more. It may not be the right length, of course.

Thanks, R.H. The spindle fits into the crank arms just perfectly, so I am not quite sure how a narrower spindle would fit? Anyways, I'll do like you say and try the filing. If not, I'll go over to a French axle. The one I have is 128mm, and am hoping it is correct for a double crank w/ 4-speed cluster.

I see no mention of a narrower spindle in his post.

I addition to filing the cotters at the same angle (what the angle is doesn't matter), the need to be filed the same amount so that they protrude equally.
