Norman Coronation Model from 1953
 

Just purchased (indeed it is still on its way to me...) is this rather fantastic Norman Coronation Model from 1953.
Made to celebrate Her Majesty's Coronation, I imagine this is now something of a rare beast?
A little work required to get it roadworthy again but surely worthwhile!
More pictures in due course as work progresses.
In the meantime, does anybody else have one of these or maybe even a brochure from 1953?

Yes, I would assume that's a rare beast. I look forward to more photographs! Normans always had fabulous over-the-top graphics.

There are a few Norman brochures that you can find on the web, but it is difficult to figure out when they were printed. I had one that appeared to describe the 1950 product line (I've given it to @photogravity).

Nice find. I always love those Norman chainrings. They are so cool. I'll be quite interested to see some closeup pictures of the components: pedals, rear hub, shifter, head badge, etc.

I was an eleven year old kid in 1953 and there was no way to transmit the live telecast across the pond back then. We had to wait for the film to be flown from London to New York, so for us watching the coronation on television was delayed almost a day. It was thrilling to watch.

The chain ring is fantastic isn't it! I will add photos of all the relevant areas next week and more of the amazing over the top graphics.

Was the yellow part of the paint job or did someone add to it ?

Amazing bike and a great example of a cycling generation gone by.

As far as I am aware, the paintwork is original but with a lot of "patina".... Will check for sure when it arrives - not long now hopefully!

I remember when "Live, via satellite" was a big deal for broadcasting. Now, anybody can do it on their phone with skype.

The bike looks really nice. That is an unusual paint for that time period. I am used to seeing solid colors.

The Norman finally arrived today! On brief initial inspection, appears better than I imagined - hooray!

It appears that it is a "Conquest" model.
No idea what is going on with the paintwork; seems to be weird patination. Hope to try and find out what the original finish was but, of course, this will stay as it is now, not restored / resprayed!

Overall condition looks great. Love that chainring. The bright work looks to be in terrific condition. Bluemels too! Brooks, now I don't feel so bad about the B15 on my Rudge

one Q?, are those the original grips do you know ?

If if this is a rider grease time would be the next order of business.

The grips look like aftermarket replacements to me - just like ones I had on my racer in the 70's.....
Yes grease is most definitely needed, together with a general service. All seems quite free except the rear hub which is TIGHT! Will strip it if necessary but it will not be replaced, I am sure it is saveable.
Long term plans - well I plan on the odd excursion through the country lanes but it will not have a hard life. It deserves a bit of cherishing having survived all these years.
