Raleigh in Nigeria in the 60's
There was a very popular Raleigh bike in Nigeria in the 1960's that everyone rode. It was always black, single speed, rod operated rim brakes (not cable). I wonder what model it was and if there are pictures or manuals anywhere?

Raleigh's famous "Bobby bike" is the DL-1 or Tourist, but they usually had a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hub. They may have built the bike you remember as an Africa-specific model.

If you google 'bike nigeria' and select images, you'll get a lot. This one says Blue Diamond, not Raleigh, but it's a cool looking bike anyway.

If it had 26" wheels it possibly could have been a Dawn series bike. Hercules, Triumph and BSA, along with some others built similar bikes too.

The DL-1 is still quite popular in 3rd world countries. China is still cranking out DL-1 clones under the "Flying Pigeon" label, as does (IIRC) "Hero" bicycles in India.

I seem to recall reading that BSA's Indian arm had a factory in Africa that was for some years very successful until Chinese imports killed their business.
