Pewter Trek Gets A Manicure

Turns out I'd rather have a few perfect bikes than a bunch of imperfect ones, so it was pretty exciting to find a close match to the Trek pewter paint on my two 710s.

Deborah Lippman "Take The A Train" base layer with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat. "OMG it's the BEST!!" said the super helpful beauty supply person.

Can you spot the touch-ups? Probably, but it's pretty invisible in real life and imperfection is more about surface prep than color.

Finally got it together to take pictures of a repair. This is the "Before"

After some careful sanding with tiny piece of 320 wet/dry. Nice bright metal underneath!

Wet paint! Nail polish is fantastic...brush strokes and other unwanteds just disappear as it dries. Goes on thick and dries very thin with barely a lip.

One coat coverage, now dry. You can see how uniform it became. It really would be a perfect match if the nail polish had bigger sparkly bits. The base coat is more matte than the bike paint until you...

...apply the top coat. I do two coats, allowing maybe 20 min between. Wife: "20 minutes?? I wait two minutes. It's fine. Stop obsessing." Visibly delighted to know WAY more than me about how to make this bike repair.

And that's all there is to it! When finished you can see the touch-up if you look closely but you really have to look.

The exception is inside when light from a single source can make the touchups look darker depending on the angle. Probably because of the smaller sparkly bits. But outside? Awesome!

Certainly a win-win if your Wife can use the rest .:thumb:

Excellent! I have a Trek 700 in need of much touch up - Now I'm inspired.

I found the base blue (testors) but the testors grey does not match the pewter headtube

Maybe I need to head over to CVS - and take some more time on the prep and layering.

Thanks

Joe

Wifey makes fun of me when I wander over to the nail polish aisles when she drags me to Ultra.

(Yes, I know it's "Ulta," it's just much more funny to say "Ultra." Like it's some kind of Japanese super hero store, or maybe a store where code breakers sell cryptography equipment.)
