Alright Winter, BRING IT!!

I purchased this Schwinn Crosspoint for the Deore parts for another build. The frame with the bar, brakes and shifters has been sitting in the garage for a year. It has a dent in the top tube. Well winter is here and I had nothing to ride so I built this frame up from my parts bin. Cost me $12 for tubes. I have kids that need Christmas presents so cheap cheap cheap. Bring it winter, I am ready! Lets see those winter beaters?

Shimano 600 rear hub laced to Mavic MA 2 rim
Shimano Deore front hub laced to Mavic MA 3 rim
Vitoria Cross tires 700 x 34
Shimano Light Action derailleurs
Ritchie bars and Stem
7 speed Deore Grip Shifters brakes
Shimamo Crankset

The kiddies are getting sharp sticks for Xmas, more bikes for the old man :thumb:

Not completely crummy? The Poprad is the go to.

A little tougher out? The Croll loves winter roads.

Still slipping around? Then we have just the OT thing.

Worse yet? grab a fifth of Old Crow and go ice fishing.

Mine is ready - a Diamond back Topanga. It is wearing wider tires than those shown in the photo.

Not vintage but this is my main winter ride for this year. Still have to get the studded tires and fenders on the mountain bike for the really bad days.

88 Marin Pine Mountain, no snow and lots of ice now so I have swapped the front Hakka 300 for the beefiest Ice Spiker Pro. Great bike for Winter gravelgrinding.

Well, we don't have the white stuff like many of you so the winter bike is not too narly looking. In fact, quite civilized.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=490672 Mostly have to look out for brine spray and salt for when it does get a little icy around here. After all, I don't have to go out when I don't want to. Retired ya know.:)

Dude, asking winter to "bring it" in Chicagoland is playing with fire (or ice maybe?).

Tell me about it, lots of wind, it's in the low 70's hardly anyone at the beach....Yep, Old man winter is here...:roflmao2:

Tough looking Croll!
What tooth count are you running on your compact double and how do you like it?

Thanks,

The crankset runs a 42/27 tooth count pulling a 12-28 8 speed cassette. I had tried running a triple with the brifters, but was not satisfied with the results (especially when things got dirty). The accompanying upgrade to the xtr RD, made the straight shimergo setup smooth on both ends. Being able to adjust the stops to suit the double has eliminated chain drop as an issue, even when shifting the rear at the same time.

The 27 pulling 28 combo gets me up anything around here that I can find with exception of those trails that require more traction than a typical MTB tire offers. The 42 pulling 12 keeps me from being spun out as well. In between, I find that 8 speed spacing isn't too close or wide for the type of riding I do with this bike. This bike was the result of a lot of experimenting, and it's very close to being called done (I may futz with the bars some more, but the angle is about right now).

You guys must be out of your tree!

It's been in the low 50's during the day here in the SF Bay Area... Too cold to ride!

I've become a weather wuss in the 35 years that I've lived in sunny California!

I HATE Winter and the cold and the snow and how long it all lasts. So...

This is where I ride and there is never any snow. A hurricane or two, sure, but you don't have to shovel rain and wind...

This is me, at 240 pounds standing beside last year's Winter bike...

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...8&d=1445904381

And this is me, at less than 190lb, standing beside this year's Winter bike...

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...1&d=1434568514

Well, guess I lost so much weight that I don't show up in the picture. I actually have to stand up twice just to make one shadow:-) Hope to drop to 180 this year but Mr. Red Stripe might have something to say about that.

That sounds about right- if we have an insane winter- I'm blaming Steve.

I blame the Cubs.

Thanks. I am not exactly sure what a CX Mule is? I do know it was a fun first ride. The bike is more like a big BMX bike I rode as a kid than a heavy mountain bike. The first thing I did was try to ride a wheelie and then I jumped the sidewalk curb ramp when coming back home. I felt like I was 12 again.

It was a parts bin build. I would like to set the bike up for the off road trails that are at the woods minutes from my house. I hiked the trails with my wife a couple weeks ago. Some steep climbs. I will need to do something about the cheap BB and road crankset. Not sure if I want to go modern drive train or keep it old, compact double or a triple? The one thing I don`t want to lose is the speed on the road. With skinny tires, this bike really goes.

I was using reverse psychology. If I am ready for it, it wont come. LOL

No riding in snow or ice for me. I have more seasonally appropriate toys for those conditions.
A wet bike with full fenders works for me Nov thru Feb.

I figure I'm doing that too- I just got a super puffy down winter jacket. I figure, by doing that, I'm guaranteeing windbreaker weather all season. :D

VictorKnox 11-29-15 11:16 AM

I built this up last weekend in preparation for a huge winter storm that didn't end up amounting to much. I rode it last week, but now that the snow and ice are gone and the forecast is fairly warm, it might have to sit for a while...

I just want to say you all build awesome looking bikes. I'm getting a good idea what I can do with mine just looking at all of these. Inspiring! :)

My HardRock in a pic from last winter:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g...2/IMG_2277.JPG

I have enough bikes that I just hung it up in a hook on the basement, complete with studded tires, waiting for the snows to come this year. However, I did move the Albatross bars and brake levers to my regular commuter, so I'll need to swap in something else. Or maybe we'll get a break from the snow in Boston this year.

Steve Whitlatch 11-29-15 04:38 PM

Took the bike out for a good shack down ride today. No snow. The knobby tires are pretty loud on pavement and made a 10 mile ride feel like 50. 38 degrees outside. The bike held up just fine, the rider needs a bit of help though. :)
