Question for the Cannondale/Black Lightning faithful

In the '89/'90 model years, could you get a Cannondale road bike, or frameset, that was black mettalic w/gold graphics that wasn't a Black Lightning?

I believe so. Henry III had one with gold Superbe Pro, and I've seen a couple that I thought were Black Lightnings, but were not.
I am not sure the model year, though.

mtnbike may know.

I've seen black '88 SR600's. Probably a rare find and you may not get the criterium series frame that the Black Lightning had. You can powdercoat or paint (as I did).

I have an '89 road frameset I picked up earlier this year that is metallic black with gold graphics. Just trying to find out what it is. It came to me with Cyclone 7000 group with Gran Comps brakes. Doesn't match anything in the catalog, so either it was swapped at some point, or was sold as a frameset.

Interesting find. That would be the first SR that had gold decals (in my experience) but not a BL. You might have one that was a special order. Same decal kit as a BL sans BL on chainstay. Does it have a 3.0 criterium series decal on the seat tube? Pics??

I'll snap some pics tomorrow. It's built up now, sort of a modern low end BL. 3x9 Sora with a Cannondale EX triple crank, dual pivot brakes, all black. NO Crit decal. Road series. Too bad it's small for me.

I've heard/read that Cannondale offered customer request colors back in the day, so you just might have one. That or a repaint/build. Also, check your serial number for the year (in case you didnt).

I swapped @Henry III a Holdsworth Cyclone for his 1986 black and gold Cannondale a month ago.

It is my Velo Cheapo entry and will be mostly Shimano 105, except for the RGC 400 calipers and Dia Compe levers. Rims from a 2001 Lemond Nevada City.

Mine was an 86 that was before they were officially called black lightnings but came with the sweet black and gold Superbe Pro. Had the black with metallic speckles in the paint. Nice but too big for my britches.

Yes, I have had a handful of mid-late 80's Cannondale SR frames come through The Lab that were black with gold decals but did not have the BL decal on the chainstay.

Thanks Doc. Makes for a nice color combo.

My brother bought a new Black lightning frameset back in the later 80's, that came with the black and gold Superb Pro front and rear derailleurs. It was an early Black Lightning, pre cantilevered chainstay/dropouts......
IIRC, the black and gold anodized derailleurs can only be had if you buy the frameset and not the complete bike.....

Cool Cannondale. There isnt a hill around here that you wouldnt climb with that crankset. These can be made unbelieveably quick with a modern wheelset. You will get a kick out of riding this (if the fit isnt too far off).
