Are old 3 speed bike frames spaced close enough to newish 26" mtb wheels to do this swap?

Many 3-speed rear wheels are spaced at 120mm. Many new MTB wheels are 135mm.

Many 3-speed 26" wheels have a bead seat diameter of 590mm, whereas MTB 26ers are 559.

I've seen it done but brake reach can be a problem... usually you can run big fat tires though. Drum brakes or a coaster in the rear would be the way to go.
