I believe its been this way the entire time I've been a member. I could be wrong though since I do more trading than selling.

I believe it has been that way since before you first joined. Worthwhile too, no pop up advertising.

I recently found that out, too. I think it's something like 12 bucks for a year, so it ends up being less than ebay with the % they take

It's been like that since I joined. Apparently, looking at the join dates in this thread, I'm an old timer.

Back when Orville and Wilbur were selling here, it was the same way.

Welcome to the forum, but if you feel so strongly, at 26 posts, this may not be the forum for you.

If you joined just to sell, I understand, but this is not a sales site, the sale threads are more of a service for the enthusiasts.

Trading is much more active here, which tends to inform a bit about the type of enthusiasts we are: fun, but cheap.

Give it a chance for a while, and it may grow on you. Kind of like fungus, but without the annoying appearance.

Actually, It's $20 for 2 years, so less than $1 a month. Plus the benefits of membership. Way better than ebay, plus good community.

I've been a member for almost 15 years and it has been that way for a l-o-n-g time. Being a paying member doesn't cost that much and you don't see any ads.

I did the membership thing back when it was the Red Star beside your screen name, its not charging you for putting ads up, its supporting the site, and as a bonus you avoid the ads and several other things are a part of paying the small fee. And, putting in items for sale, in that sub-forum, is just a bonus.

Good grief. Bike Forums is a lot of work and the staff deserves something from us besides our banter. My opinion, of course. That said, why would you balk, for even one second, to support such a wonderful vintage bicycle resource?

As others have posted, a membership is required to post items for sale. It has been this way for a long time.

The membership rates are $12 for 1 year and $20 for 2 years. There is also a 30 day trial membership for $3.

https://www.bikeforums.net/payments.php

By the way, the Admin and Moderator staff earn no pay for our service.

Just look at it this way, giving $20 means the site is that much closer to hiring someone to fix the beyond terrible search feature…or its that much closer to being able to switch to a different message board platform which fully works.

But it must cost something to keep the site running.

I'm hearing no compelling reason that it should be free, other than an unwillingness to pay.

I don't think you need to apologize. I bet each and every female member here is happy to consider herself "just one of the 'gis."

Heck, I'm a Cheap SOB. I pinch pennies so hard, Lincoln cries.

I paid the $20 to support the community, and to turn off the ads without guilt. If I had 26 posts, $20 would be too much, but I'm sure I'll hit "a penny a post" in the next two years.

Well put! I like my wimmen like I like my bikes: fun, but cheap, clean, no major dings, and stay away from anything in this millennium.
and yes, I'm a fun guy.

What's a buck per month for the benefit of selling/avoiding all the ads? Me, I'd pay twice that (and did; for some reason I got billed on the 26th and 27th of November for my yearly recurring payment. No biggie) and still be smiling
