I just went to the Junk in the Trunk vintage sale today in Scottsdale. Wife wanted to go for Mothers day. Next to no bike stuff for sale but there was an artist that had really nice photos of different vintage bikes in a frame with little parts mounted on the edges...chains, gears etc. The price per pic (24" x 24" +-) was like $250!

The unspecified work (below) lives in my hometown, Columbus Indiana, at the city Recycle Center. i stopped to look at it today up close dropping off yard waste... The namebadges/decals I could make out said Murray, Next, schwinn, Sears; pretty much a combination of women's stepthrough frames and kids " mountain" bikes.

supposedly Chicago sourced metals were used in this work. Placard at the landfill said $26,000 under description of the work but I think it was donated to the city, not a commissioned public sale.

for its first year in town it was displayed on the City Hall front lawn. Recycle Center may be its permanent, logical destination? Maybe its for sale at $26k.

Meh, to most people old junk is old junk. I could show you my collection of old military rifles, and I doubt most could pick out which ones hold quite a bit of value and which were produced in quantities of tens of millions and once sold for $30 at local sporting goods stores on Black Friday. Sure, it is different when you are familiar with the brands and the market, but most simply aren't.

I agree with the comment above, the odds of something truly unique and deserving of being saved being found on the cheap or free that these artists work with is relatively low.

On a personal note, I don't see the appeal in any of those structures. They are rather ugly to me.

Plenty of reasons to visit Columbus, Indiana if you are interested in architecture. We stopped in for a couple of days last year for the tour. Many of the city's public buildings are by internationally recognized architects. Started after WWII with plans for a new school. The head of Cummins Diesel (headquartered there) was appalled at the planned design and offered to pay the architect's fee if the finalist was selected from an offered list. The rest is history that not too many people know about. Neat place and worth a visit.

Nice people trail system here for the size of our town, and lots to see from the saddle. I love Richmond VA, btw. Wife's family from Roanoke Valley area... been a long time since our last visit. gw.
