Off a quick search...
If the serial number on your GT triple triangle frame starts with "Y", it likely indicates that the frame was manufactured in Taiwan. |

Nice looking bicycle. This Diamond Back is from the time when China Bicycle Corporation owned Western Stated Imports. The new owners dropped the Centurion brand name in the USA in favour of Diamond Back, but they still tried to link back to "Centurion".
I would suggest that the serial number is U01015523. This is consistent with Diamond Back serial numbers of this era. The manufacture date: first digit 0 = 1990, next digits 10 = October. |
1988 Centurion Sport DLX
1988 Centurion Sport DLX.
The serial is quite hard to read. I may use a flat file on the paint to see if I can get it more readable before the frame goes in the scrap metal bin. 71102505 Third one of these I've had. Second one was sent to California. Blue & white color like the catalog photo. This is the white and yellow which is a bit flashier than the blue. My two least favorite colors for bikes as they shows the dirt and flaws the most. It arrived covered in fine saw dust. The donor said he bought it from a friend, rode it on Ragbrai the year of Saggy Thursday (legendary headwind day), 1995. Then hasn't ridden it since. It was sitting in his woodwork shop for years. I started cleaning the dust off, it did clean up quite well, and found the blip & crack on the downtube. Doh. Hum I wonder if the donor crashed the bike or if his friend did and sold it to him anyhow. The Sport DLX was revised every year, 1987 had stem shifers, 1988 down tube indexed shifters, 1989 completely different bike... The Sport DLX was a lower end model. Stamped steel front der is the cheapest part on it. No brake release. Plenty of aftermarket accessories. Flickstand, 2 cages, mirror, bent Zefal HPX, tiny seat bag. Plastic rear dropout inserts. Never seen those before. Been my experience that Centurion branded bikes seem to have the highest damage/failure rate of any brand. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...874397bd76.jpghttps://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6d939d2282.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1eb2e916e6.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...07b4f74454.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...88811d27d8.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a6523b8085.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b2a5da0c86.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c8f7b39451.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...aff67f595d.jpg striped of accessories, bizarro pedals, rusted shift cables and cleaned up. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8a60633322.jpg |
unidentified frame
I aquired this repainted frame that was loaded with deerhead components, serial A5A8597. tig welded steel frame with false lug at seatpost cluster. The derailleurs are dated 1984. The previous owner had no information to offer except that he aquired the bike in the 80s.

I have a Japanese made Ritchey sold exclusively to the Canadian market thru Rockey Mountain in my horde that has the same serial number format and the same phsical details. Toyo of Japan seems to be the best known maker of lugged frames for Ritchey, but these frames that I have are tig welded and have the reinforcing collar at the seatpost top. Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

OK Hummer....You WERE Right.........
I thought this morning was a good time to FINALLY solve the mystery of my World Tourist as shown below.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0d917a309d.jpg The serial number is GD8XXXXX and the headbadge stamping is 1048. I still don't know who made it because there are no stickers denoting Japan or Taiwan on the frame anywhere. However you identified it as a 1988 model and you were correct. After much searching over the bike which is all original (except for the tires/tubes) I found a bunch of date codes on various components. The Shimano freewheel is date coded LK which translates to Nov 1987. The Shimano front derailleur is date coded LL which translates to Dec 1987. The Joytech hub on the rear wheel is coded B88 which I'm guessing is Feb 1988. The 1048 assembly stamping on the headstock badge I now understand from your post way back translates to the 104th day of 1988.....which is April 13th. So, I'll now be able to quit having this nagging voice in my head saying that I should finally figure out what this bike really is. Yeah, I know......I should get out more. Still......it would be nice to know WHO actually built it........ |

Giant started making bikes for Schwinn in 1977. The Giant (Taiwan) built bikes usually have a Gmmyy number stamped on the other dropout. But looking through my records, those date codes seem to run from 1981 to 1986. I've seen that same date code on other brands of bikes as well. Schwinn changed to China Bicycle (china) as their next builder. Deal signed in spring of 1987. This time Schwinn bought in to the company so you could say that those bikes were built in a Schwinn owned (partially) factory, not just purchased from another company. Schwinn also had the Greenville Mississippi plant going then but it's output was mainly mid range road bikes such as the Traveler, Le Tour, Tempo, Circuit, Voyageur and Premis. Rick |
Well, Rick, I'm going to go out on a limb here and call that GD8 serial number a Giant made bike.
I've owned at least 2 early 80's Giant-Schwinns and, yes, the Giant build date code was on the left hand rear dropout. They MAY have eliminated the build code on my World Tourist and just went with a "normal" serial number with the G designating Giant. The build date was,of course, moved up to the head badge. Maybe this Schwinn will just keep its country of origin a deep dark secret. |
Kuwahara Musashi tandem.
Moo Saa Shee very rare tandem from japan. serial T2C00013 1982 (number 13 in the production series) No finding a 1982 Kuwahara catalog on the www. It was all ET the Extraterrestrial movie with the boys riding Kuwahara BMX bikes in 1982. Suntour BL rear derailleur introduced in 1980. No finding any info on the www. Musashi was a Japanese swordsman. The tandem was coated in barn dust. A quick wipe down. Cannondale rack pack is very filthy, maybe critters were nesting in it. Bar wrap unraveling. Spenco brake lever cover pads. 1982 city license sticker. Odd pedals (not stock). Cyclepro saddles. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a33bc58c15.jpg Kuwahara Musashi tandem 1982 https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5858a37bdc.jpg Kuwahara Musashi tandem 1982 https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...388a20cfaa.jpg Kuwahara Musashi tandem 1982 https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3468848467.jpg Kuwahara Musashi tandem 1982 https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1d2f769573.jpg Kuwahara Musashi tandem 1982 https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bbef5a604a.jpg Kuwahara Musashi tandem 1982 |

My Eyes aren't what they used to be but I think it's a heavy coat of paint. Panasonic DX4000 that was dropped off for rehab. Of course it has a stuck seatpost.

Finally, finally started digging into my 1984 Araya MB26L. It's not done, but it's in fewer pieces than it was. Serial # ARYK411615. After much digging in Araya's catalogs from the time, I found the diamond frame version of this; of course it's in Japanese so I can't tell if it mentions the mixte but it definitely doesn't show it.
Here's the CL ad photo. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4e6a90dbb4.jpg |
For anyone interested, here's the Araya catalog archive; my bike is in the 1983-85 catalog, as near as I can tell on page 5, the MB-MF26B; the stem is the same, the gold decals, the headbadge, the bolted on wheels. I think the RD on mine is a replacement; I couldn't find a name, but the FD is SunTour Mountech. It's all SunTour, including the Power Shifter thumbies, which I love, with Dia-Compe brakes. Judging from the price she's pretty low-end (especially being a "lady's" bike), but damn she's gorgeous. You can't see in the pic, but she's candy apple red with that translucent paint.
If anyone can translate the catalog or know somewhere that can, I'd love to know if I'm right. |

That's weird; your photo doesn't show up for me on the page, but it does in this quote.
EDIT: Nope, posted and I can't see it, just the ip address.

Been trying to find information about which manufacturer built this frame, as I want to get it repainted and properly given appropriate decals. I had to come here as a last resort, as ever since I bought the frame before rebuilding, it defied any of my attempts at identifying, having mistakenly thought to be a Muddy Fox, but turned out to be some Mongoose IBOC clone with subtle differences.
Serial number is RY92XXXXXX wrapped around the BB. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...72a31f0dca.jpg bikeforums.net/g/album/38958101 |

That is a great piece of work T-Mar and of great value to many of us. With regard to MIKI (Japan) I understood from Peter White that they used the following: M for Miki followed by the year and month. So M for Miki, 9 for year and D for month.
As UK Marque Enthusiast for Falcon Cycles in the V-CC I have tested this against a number of Falcon frames with known provenance and found it to be accurate. One always needs to remember, as with all dated components, that the year of their manufacture and the completion of a bicycle are not always exactly the same. One needs to allow for transit time and stock holding, especially over year ends. |
Identification Diamond Shimano AX
Still can't figure out the date of my Diamond Shimano AX frame. Full ADAMAS, no code on rear derailleur. Only rear Hub has FH, which should be august 1981
Frame number is 2B14451 In another thread, I found a another one starting with 2B, and that was a 1982... Anyone? |
