That's a cool Avalanche! I recently picked up a 97 Avalanche LE. Put a rigid fork on it for riding on the street.

So I picked up this (I believe to be) 94 GT Karakoram a few weeks back. First got it with a riser, adjustable stem, and cruiser bars. I took those off and threw on some carbon fiber bars I had sitting around and replaced the seat. I am loving this bike so far, it's my "everything" bike (around town, commuter, etc). Rides great. Practically mint except for the handlebars. I've got plans to put dirt drops on her--the cigne stem (by velo orange) is in the mail

I have loved GT since my first Timberline back around '94 or so. Recently picked up a Traffic to use for some urban rides and ride it more than the nice bike anymore.

Man thats a nice Karakoram. the red stem and the black wheels just make it look so much better.

Thanks, it's original to the bike, the previous owner handed it to me as I was loading the bike:



Wheels were purchased for something else and when they came I knew they just weren't right for it. They work pretty well on this but they're nothing great.

DOA GT strike

Picked up this 1996 GT strike a little bit ago from a second hand sporting goods store. Ive wanted one of these road bikes for years now and when a buddy saw this he called me immediately. I was in the process of restoring it and found that the headtube has been cracked in three places. Heartbroken. If anyone has or finds a 53-55 mid 90s GT strike I would much appreciate the heads up.

Well, it finally got built but not what I planned, too small even doing the drop bar.

Back to thinking of doing the drop bar on this one again, I had it listed too but I don't think I want to let it go. Needs better wheels but otherwise it's pretty decent.

Here is mine. '94 'Avalenterawoods' frame, and some BMX bits. It is my daily rider, and cruises great. I LOVE these frames, and am on the lookout for a small steel/cromo one to build up.

Stopped at work to drop off a bunch of Flip bikes for sale and while there I bought a GT Avalanche 3.0 with mechanical disk brakes from a customer. I have the bike stripped down all ready and I am planning out it's build. I am thinking a Cromo Suspension Corrected fork to replace the junk heavy XCM one & then either a 8 or 9spd setup with a set of 2.4 tires I have.

Just picked this up at the local charity / thrift store (aka "St. Vinny's") spring bike sale, a 19?? All Terra Talera. All CrMo. White with the "crackle" effect. Here it is right from the sale, before we even put it on the stand:

This is our first 3T GT, so I'm at a loss as to the year. Dunno if this sheds any light:

Tires appear to be fairly recent replacements. STI shifters are gummed up and not working. I'm guessing that's why it was donated. Hub bearings are screaming for a repack. Headset and BB are surprisingly smooth. 200GS der's. Exage hubs, Araya Japan rims, etc.

When we got home, there was a call on our GoldStar answering machine. 1991 had called; it wanted its water bottle back:

That, and the handlebar bag (it was pinching the brake cable!), were the first things to go.

Has anyone put more "street" wheels/tires on this model?

Edit - oh, does anyone have a close-up of how the U-brake bail cable should go around the seat tube? A lot of the pics I see indicate there's a band there that guides the cable, and I think I recall seeing one where it crosses itself behind the tube. This one, it's just bare cable on either side of the tube, and of course it's rubbed off the paint. Is there a piece missing on this bike, or is this just how it came, being a lower-end version?

That looks early 90s. There is a GT brake cable guide thing for the seat tube. Less aggressive street tires would work great. PM me if you want to trade those tires for a set of less knobby tires.

Also, that frame is probably too small for whoever was riding it at that seat height.

Just like mine! Your frame is in much better condition thought - I really rode it hard. I bought it new back in the late 90s. I recently got it out of storage, gave it an overhaul and a new drive train, tires, etc. My son rides it now and doesn't want to give it up, despite several attempts at bribery.

heres another one it doent look like i posted, a 1988 Avalanche. It was covered in Neon yellow paint and this is after i got the yellow paint off. and when i discovered the gourgeous copper Araya Rim in the back is cracked. :-(

Yeah, these mid 90s GT piston stems look awesome. I love the welds on this frame too; " pulse welded with an AK47" as I saw on another forum. This bike is still my go-to, and gets ridden nearly daily...

So what experience do folks have with the aluminum-frame Panteras, ca. 1995? I'm seeing one online nearby, but the photos are awful, so no idea of the condition. Any feedback on how the aluminum frames hold up?

Update - you are correct sir, the white bike turns out to be a 1991. And yeah, it's for my wife. I had just run the seat up for the ride down to the school for the photo shoot. But these things must have some sort of magnetic attraction. Month or so later, a 1993 Talera comes up on CL, my size, $20. Once again, shifters not working (sticky pawls). I'm using it now as my commuter, running 2.0 knobbies, thanks to EVERY possible route to work (only 1.5 miles) having construction:


Rides like a dream, fits me perfectly, buttery shifting. About the only MTB I have this size that doesn't have me reeeeaching (long legs, short torso).

So now we have yet another "his-&-hers" pair (along with '98-ish Trek 820s, late '80s Trek 9something roadies, mid-'70s Raleigh Gran Sports).

So that '95-ish aluminum Pantera is still available. Still fishing for info on whether those frames are any good.

The plan is to swap the comps from the 56cm to the 54 and sell off the larger frame.
