That is a beautiful bike. Nice lines and those fenders fit beautifully.

Early 70s Schwinn Super Sport

No pic posting privileges yet, but my 1973ish Schwinn Super Sport has been my sport tourer bike. I bought it used when I was 18 in 1975. I have seen over the years lots of criticism on the "heavy" crank, but one cannot deny its durability and ease of maintenance. I am a solo rider out seeing the countryside, so a couple extra pounds never bothered me.

I always thought of the statements about ashtabula cranks more as a bit of teasing than criticism. One thing about those old Schwinns, they were designed to survive a zombie apocalypse. Looking forward to seeing the pics. I've been keeping my eye out for one locally as I'd love to own one one day.

Opaque Blue with quite a few scrapes and such. On my second Brooks saddle on it. Recently converted to a 12 speed with a 14-26 Suntour from a local co-op. To me it was always just a "nice" bike. After recently getting the "racier" Centurion, and then wasting time researching things, I read that the old Super Sport is described as having a Cadillac style ride. Kinda sums it up.

Post some pics when you get a chance. I'm rebuilding an early 70s Opaque Blue Schwinn Sports Tourer that probably looks almost identical to yours, except the BB shell and dropouts.

People hate on the one-piece cranks. Yes, they're a bit heavy. But in the BMX world there are both high-end and low-end one-piece cranks. Lots of very high-end BMX race bikes in the 70s, 80s, and even early 90s used very high quality chromoly one-piece cranks made by Sugino and others that cost quite a bit of money. Puts things into perspective.

If a finger wouldn't fit it was a racer, if one finger fit it was a sport tourer, and if TWO fingers fit, it was a tourer.
But looking at my collection and from some of the discussion that pointed out that a sport tourer should have accommodation for fenders and rack, meaning mounts on the dropouts and clearance for fenders, with room for at least moderately wide tires.
So I've divided my middle catagory into "Sports" and Sport Tourers".
Thanks for that, I came here wondering...what is a sports tourer. Now wondering if my world sport can fit fenders

About 1980 as a 20 year old, I made some home made panniers to drape over the rear rack. Packed a tent and sleeping bag on top of the rack and rode from Toledo to Chillicothe in southern Ohio to visit a college buddy for a couple days. No gps or cell phones then. Slept in state parks at night. A wide berth west of Columbus going down and east on way back up. Just a kid on an adventure and in no hurry. The old Schwinn front axle clicker odometer showed 3 centuries amongst the 6 or 7 riding days, but I was just riding and taking in the scenery all by my lonesome. Good times. Simpler times.

Many came with them by the time the dealer got done with you and it certainly was a better design than the standard, stay crushing design.

Nice topic and thank you for asking!

I present my '73 Mondia Special. Like many of the cool bikes of the time it is Nervex Pro double lugged Reynolds 531, Campy Nuvo Record all the way around.

I just acquired a '74 Raleigh International that I haven't even documented yet, but I am anxious to have the two bikes side by side.

A '74 Raleigh International - As acquired. I just picked this bike up a couple of weeks ago. The guy I bought it from bought it in 1976 from a "kid who worked in a bike shop".....wait for it...... in my home town. I left that town in 1973 to go to college. I wonder if I may have known the kid. Anyway, I am excited to have this bike and to go through it.

Critic's be damn.

One could show up to a Sat. AM group ride on a vintage steel bike and you may find it humorous observing a few snobs riding modern carbon. I hear it all the time. They like to rap on how great they're bike is but the fact is its about the motor.

Likely most won't have their bike after four years, anyways. They give up riding, or the other kind will buy an 'upgrade'.

Old Schwinns will outlive the cockroach.

I have a 60s era Schwinn Racer with the Ashtabula crank and one I truely appreciate. Its a big part of the reason I like the bike. If anything, most of these Schwinns can benefit with an aluminum rim and decent tire combo.

That’s the nice thing about the SuperSport; aluminum rims, handlebars, and steering stem. Not a whole lot of steel besides the crank and seatpost. Ready to ride as pictured is 37 lbs. sounds heavy, but flat roads and casual riding for me. 20 mile rides aren’t really a problem for this 61 year old rider. 70-80 psi in tires and just enjoy the scenery or crank it up on occasion too. Vintage but does the job as I ain’t racing anyone.

I have a surprising amount of sports touring bikes. The only one that is debatable is the Mercian. The Mercian has side pull brakes, but is closer to a full blown touring bike than the others.

76? Fuji the finest

78 Schwinn Superior

73 Raleigh Gran Sport

02 Mercian KOM

I have posted my LeTour before, but I made a few changes to expand its range. A long cage derailleur was the last piece I needed to put it all together.
