Getting rid of stuff
 

How do you guys take care of getting rid of old bike parts? I don't mean the real junk... That stuff can go into the trash I don't even hesitate. I mean, the extra brakes that you don't have a use for but you've been holding into for a year or two. Or the levers or derailers. Extra stems that are just like all the other basic nitto's you already have a few of.

I got rid of a lot of stuff last year, and I am kicking myself for it. First gen 105 Aero levers with white hoods, some drops and brakes and derailers. Extra forks, etc. I'm kicking myself now! That's not even the start of what I was going to toss, but someone payed me a few bucks to take the lot.

I had a time away from cycling and didn't really think about why I needed any of this stuff. Unfortunately, I wanted a lot of it and now I really want some of it!

This is me saying, I have a box now and it's for old bike stuff that is nice, that I can't use at the moment. But that I will use eventually! And I have a storage unit that I'm probably going to dedicate to my bike and car part collection. I don't want to have to re collect everything again! Even if it is in boxes not getting looked at, some of this stuff really isn't junk at all.

You'll get to a point where you have a great set of components in need of a bike!

That reminds me, I have a beautiful set of Rigida rims laced to Campy NR hubs and need to go bike hunting. :)

There are several bike co-OP's in Portland. I wait until I have a box full & donate to them. If they don't want or can't sell, it goes into their metal recycling.

Get rid of stuff? Perish the thought. (The top shelf isn't bicycle related). Reminds me that I have to dig thru the SA box looking for some bits. I'm still attempting to wrest disorganization out of total chaos, so digging thru the SA box isn't my top priority. Patience, sir.

I'm trying to de-clutter. I realize I hoard a lot of stuff on the idea that it might come in handy one day. That's not a good philosophy. If I need it, I'll get it, even if I had one before. I plan to bring a lot of stuff to the bike coop.

This is good for your health and I mean that.

I try to sell off stuff at regular internals as it over accumulates. I keep a few really nice things I don't need but good stuff that I might want someday but can't see it now has got to go. It feels good to de-clutter.

I use the extra money to buy new bike parts like a fancy stem or new tires, consumables. Sometimes if feels weird turning something that would hold value into something that will be worn away and tossed but having a better experience on my modern mountain bike because I have nice fresh rubber, new grips, and shaved a bit of weight it worth so much more... same with the road bike. Sell a bunch of run of the mill stuff to $10 here $15 there and eventually buy some nice fresh challenge tires to make next season a whole lot more enjoyable. That is the way I see it. Speaking of which I need to organize and get some stuff listed.

My main thing was that I liked to convert lower end bikes to use decent 700c wheels and upright bars. Such a nice feeling, comfort with speed! Sold a fair number of bikes that way.

Just wait til summer, I'll definitely get in on the box o crap ha ha.

i shouldnt regret, its unhealthy. But I tossed out a couple of old frame sets that I should've held onto. Lol. Oh well!

I hear you. I just finished cleaning 29 years worth of accumulated bicycle, electrical, plumbing, and wood trim parts out the basement. The electrical and plumbing stuff went to Habitat for Humanity, the wood trim on CL for free, but the bicycle parts went in the garage. :thumb:

+1, though we need to figure out a way to shrink handlebars an rims enough to fit. Paging Rick Moranis...

One of my best purchases ever on eBay was a bunch of stuff from a multi-sport shop which was closing it's bike repair operation. I think it came in two or three very heavy boxes. I got all sorts of stuff I was sure I would never need, but a couple years later I'm still putting bits to good use. Just installed a NOS Tange Levin CD headset on a Schwinn Super Sport frame over the weekend, for example. I've used several cheap axles and nuts as dropout spacers when shipping frames. Bottom brackets, miscellaneous small nuts and bolts, all sorts of odd parts came out of those boxes. My only regret is that I let more of their auctions slip past me.

If you can group things as [MENTION=6981]miamijim[/MENTION] suggested, that might be the best route. You might not get a bundle for it, but someone out there will find it useful and be thankful.

Like others here, the stuff I consider good, I either hoard, or try to sell/trade/give to an appreciative party. The other stuff, that just accumulates collaterally, I give to co-ops as the need to de-clutter arises. I don't lose sleep over what happens to either category, after I have let go. However, I do need to become a little more draconian over what should be considered "good", as the clutter has gotten a little out of hand in the past few years.

...I have an elaborate storage system that involves several of those small parts drawer thingies they make from plastic and sell cheaply at all the tool places, and a larger components system involving 8 or ten stacked plastic milk crates, which have a smaller footprint in the garage. I try not to keep anything I would not use on a better (at least mid-range) bike, but some of the really olde stuff hangs around, hoping for a perfect matchup to some 60's/70's bike project.

I find that the smaller parts drawers really are of the most benefit in the stuff I usually end up doing......I try not to buy bare frames any more, and I also avoid project bikes that are missing too many component parts. It's just too darn much work any more, and the local component supply is getting a little sparser than it used to be.

I have a track racing frame I've been trying to sell for over a year. I'm strongly considering building it back into a bike in hopes I can move it that way. I might lose even more money that way.

Shoe boxes stack very neatly. Easily labeled with a magic marker too.

Once in a while I send someone a part he/she needs.
People do the same, so it's sort of a delayed trading system.

I'm down to 3 medium-sized boxes, and have my Box o' Crap current edition stuff lined up.
Of course, that will change as my needs change, but my goal is to have nothing but spares for bikes I already have.

I'd been hanging on to a couple of hard drive boxes, they always come in handy- but I'd had these for a few weeks and no call to use them. I asked the guy in the office next to me if he needed any- he said no- so I sent them off to recycling.

Not even a full day later, I need to ship a hard drive- and no hard drive boxes anywhere around.

This is why I'm a hoarder.

My lovely wife is always tossing stuff out. Scraps of wood most often come to mind. I'll need a little bit of something, look around for something I know I saw a few days before, to no avail. ... sigh ...
