Merino wool shirt cheap!

We were out and about in Saginaw yesterday shopping around getting a taste of civilization again. We stopped at TG Maxx and I was browsing around and found a mother load of Merino wool goodies! Not to mention cheap as nothing above $15! I'm not sure what may be at other locations as it probably varies but it's worth a look. I picked up a nice Woolrich 100% Merino wool t shirt for $12. Plus they had some other sweaters for $15. Just a heads up. I also picked up a full length zipper thin sweater for $15. Will be nice for those slightly nippy slo mo morning rides.

The t shirt is worth checking out though as it doesn't have that normal t shirt fit but more like a slightly looser fitting jersey. Plus it's Woolrich so it's decent stuff! If you can't find it I found a place on eBay selling them. They seem to fit a size smaller though as I'm only 5'5" and the large fits perfectly as I normally wear a medium t shirt.

Wear these all the time.

Super comfy and this price is cheap.

Just bought two.

Thanks. :)

Also just ordered 2. I've never had these before, so I'm pretty excited to try them out.

I see no indication that this is wool.

For what it's worth, Sierra Trading Post is selling merino t shirts for $40. I just ordered one.

The Woolrich Elite Series Base Layer garments are extremely comfortable and functional. They feel like ultra-soft cotton, but wicks moisture away from the skin and allows water vapor to pass through the wool fiber without losing thermal properties. Merino wool puts a new twist on old fibre. Mercerized Merino is finer and softer than most other wools. There is no itching or scratching thanks to the 6 stage process known as mercerizing. This gives the wool the feel of cashmere and the look of silk, ideal for next-to-skin applications. The wool still has all of its original benefits including breathability, durability, moisture absorption and release, micro-climate buffer between fabric and skin, allseason wear, odor resistance, stain resistance, and crease resistance. Mercerized merino is machine washable and can be tumble dried.
Features

100% Merino Wool
Optimizes heat transfer during physical activity, keeping your body dry.
Superior to cotton or polyester, with greater breathability, temperature regulation, moisture control and inherent antimicrobial properties.
Keep comfortable in hot environments or sub-zero temperatures.
Absorbs and neutralizes unpleasant odors; an advantage when washing opportunities are limited.
Merino is finer, softer and best of all, is itch-free, unlike traditional wool.
Easy care: dry clean or machine wash, line dry
SIZE RUNS BIG.

Definitely looks interesting, although in my experience you pretty much always get what you pay for. I wonder how many washes these shirts will take before they start developing holes. That being said, if people like them I might have to snag a few myself...

noglider 01-31-16 11:18 AM

Aha. I sit corrected.

gugie 01-31-16 11:35 AM

I'll see your 2 and raise you.

Just got 3. I wear wool undershirts in cooler weather both while riding and in "civilian" clothing. The pro peloton wore them all the time, sold them when I was repping Veltec Boyer in the 80's just as synthetics were taking over. Those in the know wore them.

I can wear them 2-3 days in a row without washing, and even my hyper-sensitive wife can't tell.
@Henry III, thanks for the post!

For $11, it's worth taking a chance. In my experience you usually get what you pay for. Google "bikeforums.net: ride it like you stole it" for many exceptions.

I've never done the t-shirts yet, but I'm a big fan of wool sweaters, merino or otherwise. Except when they shrink. ;)

Ime the Merino stuff doesn't usually shrink the way lambswool or cashmere would. ymmv.

Sizing is confusing. The seller says they run big and OP seems to be saying the opposite.

If you look at the linked seller's other items, he also has lots of wicking fiber, fire ******ant garments at what appear to be very good prices. For example.

While the seller claims they run big, I'll go with your description that they run small.

I've lost some weight and am back down to size medium. But since you're making that leap of faith, I'll leap with you. Heck, it's only $12.

Speaking of wool...

Ordered two 2XL.

jetboy 01-31-16 06:03 PM

nice deal, ordered 2 myself.

crank_addict 01-31-16 06:45 PM

I'm not familiar with the T, but thanks for the tip.

Never ordered from TJMAXX but certainly bought in store Italy made Merino 100% wool sweaters. Learned you've got to spend some time sorting thru the racks as some have gucci labeled china stuff. Closely examine the material blend / percentage too. Anyways, you might already be behind the deals as they sweep the racks reading for Spring attire. Scored $60 to $120 inflated MSRP merino and cashmere sweaters for only $15 to $20. But again I emphasize, best is to first inspect, handle the merchandise and trial fit. The company is also known for purchasing 'lots' of seconds. Very pleased other than losing a few to error in laundry.... arghh.

rootboy 01-31-16 07:07 PM

Mmmmmmmmm."..........merino.

noglider 01-31-16 07:16 PM

@Rocket-Sauce, I haven't used their bibs, but Ibex stuff is excellent. Are they wool?

NJgreyhead 01-31-16 07:27 PM

Thanks, Chief.

The description says "merino/spandex ponte mid-weight bib with wool molded pad"

They just went on sale for $84 so I ordered a pair. I'll let you know how they do. The reviews are confusing. One says they run big, another says they run small. I am a little more concerned with how well they hold their "compression".

Got mine in the mail today. Definitely run big, thankfully not too big. Overall I am very pleased and it was great deal.

bamab2 02-05-16 12:26 PM

I received mine yesterday. I feel they run slightly small. I'm usually between a medium and large. I ordered large and it fits well. Nice shirts at first look. I may order a few more.
