Show me your bells!

Not sure anyone's done this one before...

So I've got a thing for vintage bells. I think every bike should have one. When I'm amongst pedestrians on a path, it's a lot friendlier than yelling out "on your left". Out in the countryside, someone's riding the opposite direction, I give 'em a ring. When I'm riding with one of my friends with a bell, if we're not together, I ring it. If I hear a ring back, all is good.

Bells are cool.

I've been told, that very loosely translated it means something like when you ride a bike you ride with the gods.

Would appreciate a more exact translation if you know.

My german if very rusty but this means something along the lines that a man stays young on a bicycle; I haven't seen the word zwei radern before; the more common word for bike is fahrrad.

This is a very cool thread.

Digging it, great bell protocol gugie.

You guys all have fantastic examples. I have a cheap retro look bell but never thought about how many unique ones there really are.

I have another bell that is nearly in pristine condition, just like it.

I just couldn't resist. I love puns and the like. There are so many things I'd like to say and ways to respond, but in writing, and if you didn't actually know me, might not be understood as good natured humor.

It seemed like an odd request, but I had the camera ready. Glad I reread the post, that would've been embarrassing.

I see where you're going with that. Even if you misread it, I'd have no problems showing mine. I like to keep 'em nice and clean, just in case someone likes to see them.

gugie 02-16-16 12:18 PM

BTW, I recorded the sound on all of my bells, and posted links to the .wav files along with the flickr pics.

gugie 02-16-16 12:21 PM

Those are some great examples! I've got a list to accumulate, Raleigh, Peugeot, Bianchi should all be "findable", but a Cinelli, that's gotta be rare!

Shamefully, I've got mostly new bells, but I did get a nice alloy bell from the UK last week, still just a plain ol' bell.

Well as others have pointed out, you do take good pics . . . .

Velocivixen 02-16-16 04:10 PM

The bell isn't vintage. It's a Crane ENE bell. All the other stuff is vintage though....well except the Paul Thumbies. It's in the spirit though.

It took me awhile to my eyes off of that cool stopwatch holder to find your bell!

Show me your bells, show me your Iver Johnsons...

What's this forum coming to...

I only have the bell that came on my old Raleigh Sprite. I feel like it's not "classy" like the beautiful works of art on here.

Pretty common for all the Italian makes to make a bell (campanello in Italian). I've seen Atala, Umberto Dei, Olympia, Wilier, Legnano and Taurus. Probably forgetting others. I've seen 2 of the Cinelli bells. Couldn't afford either.
