Brown bikes

Don't know if there's been a brown bike thread, the search function blows. Some of my started threads don't show up.

Color coordination on a brown bike is difficult. Most brown bikes I see have brown everything as in bar tape, hoods, saddle but I've never liked that look. I picked this one up Sunday. I'm going to strip the frame to clean, polish, lube and adjust everything. I want to keep the brown suede saddle on it and I was planning on black tape and housing. But I've been bored and put on some white and blue tape I have. I also trashed the old white hoods and put on the black Cane Creeks. The white tape is a no go but the blue...maybe. Any ideas? If you have a brown bike feel free post it up.

In general I like blue and brown together, and that doesn't look bad. A non day-glo yellow might be a good alternative for the tape. The brown saddle doesn't do it for me, but I'm not sure of an alternative other than regular old black.

I had a brown Fuji way back in the young buck days, no pics tho.

This is my 73 Torpado, also brown with blue housings and bar tape

Nice challenge! I would coordinate the bar tape and housing, either yellow or blue would work.

Not C or V, arguably retro, dismissed by most, loved by some; here is my Brown Bike entry.

Originally offered with a brown Brooks Swift and brown tape, I've since swapped the saddle for a Black B17 added a vintage black bag and have recently installed black Brooks tape (not pictured). If the sun comes out I'll update the photo.

Some nice bikes. Maybe I will ditch the brown saddle. I think the Turbo looks better. And it's probably 100 grams lighter haha. I do have a huge roll of dark blue cable housing. Maybe black tape/saddle and blue housing? Or the blue tape and black housing?

Sorry for the backround clutter. My bike room upstairs is trashed with another bike being disassembled.

The blue tape looks fine but I personally would prefer natural cork or black. I like my bar tape to pick up last some color from the frame or decals. Although I agree about having too much brown, a lighter colored natural cork would still contrast well and match the sidewalls on tires. Black goes well with just about any frame. Orange might also look good if you want more splash, but blue is a nice complement to the brown.

BTW, nice score on the Univega. That looks like it's in excellent condition. Looks like my size if you're planning to flip it!

I'm keeping this one. I drove up to Raleigh to get it. He also has a pinkish color one in a 54, same bike. They've been on CL for months.

Great colour for a thread! Will have to wait til Vintagerando sends the Italvega frame to me. Still gathering parts for the build.

Colour of tape for mine will be green. Seems to follow with the natural colour scheme. Outside chance for yellow to be used. Black saddle though.

Can't wait to post !

Ditto though on the Univega, it's a nice one. Triple butted goodness.

Hmm, I'm predicting an influx of Raleigh Super Course pictures. However, for something different, here is a circa 1977. mid-range St. Etienne that I owned several years ago. It was Reynolds 531 butted main tubes, Simplex SX 810, Nervar Star, MAFAC Competition and New-Star Hubs laced to MAVIC Montherly sprint rims.

Lazyass, My brown bike isn't really brown, but more like Chuckk's A-D. While the black items don't give it any 'pop', they work well.

One of the colors I'm looking at to paint a project bike is Kia brown, which is lighter than a true brown and I'm going to use red decals and cable housing with it.

And since you need a jersey to match, I may buy one or two Cima Coppi wool jerseys :D

I've had plenty of root beer brown Raleigh Sports and SuperCourses over the years, but none currently in the fleet.

I really like how my Picchio came out!

Sort of a Blonde on Blonde.

I love that Norman Fay! All it needs for the full expedition look is a rear rack and panniers.

Here is my Anthracite / metallic charcoal / "Ralph Lauren brown" (artist wife's terminology) Bianchi -- a color rarely seen for this marque.

The only Celeste is the Reparto Corse water bottle and a bit on the head badge.

KonAaron Snake 02-23-16 12:25 PM

The Norman Fay is pretty darn nice.

Brown is my favorite color for a bike. I had a metallic cocoa Letour Luxe, which is now British racing green, my second favorite color for a bike. I currently have a deep, dark chocolate brown Paramount re-paint. I went to my Photobucket account to download the pics, but it's full of videos and other oddball stuff that I didn't put there. As such, it is useless.
