LeMond Bilato Brothers
Been looking for a 57 cm pre Trek Lemond for months. Was hoping for the coveted Della Santa made vintage but finally settled on this Bilato Brothers ebay find. Planning a full restoration and going with the all white motif.
Does anyone have a paint code or something that would help get me close to the white frame color Ten Speed Drive Imports used?
Decal set I'm planning to use isn't quite period correct but it's the closest I could find.

I would not say that Bilato's a" settle"
Very nice looking! I much prefer the current paint scheme myself but see the all white as a striking pallet for the decals too.
Keep checking back for progress Definately. Are you doing the work yourself?
Welcome to the Forum! You brought a great intro bike with you !

Bilatto may not have the name recognition of Della Santa but they sure did nice work. That's a great looking frame set. Will look fantastic when refinished.

Thanks and yes I agree the Bilato vintage is fantastic as well. Not sure what tubing it has as the sticker is not present and the seller had boxed it before posting and was not willing to check inside the seat tube BB lug area for the tell tale TSX/SLX ridges. My guess is it could be either TSX or maybe SL? Either way I'm just glad to finally land one.
I'm told by the seller it's been "re-sprayed" directly over the original paint (mainly the blue area) while masking off the original decals then clear coated. If it would have been original paint I would likely be leaving it as is.
I've done a few motorcycle and bicycle frames using a professional HVLP. If you take your time with prep and know your gun and the paint system you can get an amazing finish. Not claiming "Joe Bell" level but close. I'm heading to my local paint supplier today go over my options for base coat/clear coat systems.
I'll post progress pics as I go.

Billato brothers bikes are pretty nice. I have a Billato built Tommaso that is TSX. It is a nice ride. You will enjoy yours.

Something about the paint colors on most LeMond bikes don't sit well with my eyes. It must be the shades of yellows they use on them.......
This one's not too bad with the blue next to it, but the black and yellow paint jobs on his other bikes just look weird to me.....

Oh how I lusted after a Tomasso in college. Very nice! Ended up with a "Domenics" which was named after Domenic Malvestuso. He owned a shop in Tempe AZ and had bikes made in Italy bearing his name. Unfortunately he passed of cancer in 2011.

Agreed on the LeMond colors. Most are tough on my eyes. The white however is doing it for me!

I think that the white Lemond/Billato frames used pearlescent paint. Also, "SILVA" stamped into the brake bridge has some significance. I think that it means the frame was built by one of the Billato brothers.
Billato built a lot of frames for many pro teams as well as some of the top name European frame builders.
I have a "brace" (a pair) of 1991 Lemond Team Z bikes with Bilatto built frames.
One has never touch the pavement - a wall hanger. The other has about 200 miles on it. They both have 1991 Campy C-Record gruppos with Delta brakes.
While these frames were built by Billato, they were probably painted by Ten Speed Drive in Florida as were many of the Lemond/Billato frames they imported into the US.
The Billato Team Z replica frames were painted red on top yellow in the middle and light blue on the bottom. The original (real team) Team Z frames made by Della Santa were dark blue on top, Day-Glo neon yellow in the middle and red on the bottom. They were painted by Joe Bell in southern California.
Greg Lemond in the TdF on a carbon fiber TVT frame painted in Team Z kit.
Here's some Team Z riders on bikes painted in the Billato Lemond colors??? (Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle, Theiry and Robert Millar)
As a side note, There are quite a few Lemond frames claimed to have been built by Della Santa.
Rolland Della Santa never made that many Lemond badged frames for purchase by the public so they're pretty rare.
Over the years he did make a number of "personal" frames for Greg Lemond (not his Gitanes which were all made in their own pro team frame shop).
Della Santa only made about 12 "personal" Team Z frames for Lemond. The last one was never picked up by Lemond and remained unpainted.
When I bought the 2 Billato Team Z replicas pictured above from a SoCal collector I had a chance to buy that last unpainted Lemond Della Santa frame complete with all documentation plus a set of decals. I had too many projects going on and didn't need another wall hanger so I passed on it (plus I was tapped out $$$).

Wow! Thanks for all the great history. Both your bikes are beautiful. Just looking at them takes me back to my college days when these hit the market. Wanted one but my college budget wouldn't allow it.
I noticed neither of yours has a Columbus sticker. Which tube set do you think was used on yours? I've seen several without it including mine which I find interesting. Through research I'm beginning to believe the SLX/TSX Bilato versions have the "webbed" BB shell which has three diagonal cutouts on the underside and no chain stay bridge. I think the SL frames might have the non webbed BB shell w/chain stay bridge.
Found this interesting brochure on the internet which listed each of his frames with three names: Alp D Huez/carbon, Ventoux/Cromor, Maillot Juane/ TSX. I've seen frames with these stickers which are usually located on the non drive side chain stay and so far they line up with the correct tubing indicated on the brochure. Thoughts?

I attended San Diego State University from 1987/1989 and rode on the collegiate cycling team. A number of team members had "Joe Bell" painted bikes. He and Bill Holland were partnered back then I believe. I came very close to having him re-spray my "Domenics" but again college budget held me back... We used to stop by his shop just to drool on whatever he and Bill had cooking at the time.

OP has a neat project.
For one of the kids, I'm in the process of building a tribute Team Z / LeMond, Billato made frameset. Cromor tubing. Not following any particular year but with some cues of LeMond style. Scott Drop-ins, Mavic 'starfish', Rolls, Avocet...
As a side note, I read somewhere in 90 and '91 there were slightly more than a dozen Kellog design, Merlin made titanium frames for LeMond and Team Z. They were finished in red, yellow, blue fade.

Very nice! Would love to see pics if you get a chance. I should have things underway mid next week on my restoration.

Not quite, I think in THIS case it's just the brand of the frame bit, Silva made and still makes many steel parts, including brake bridges.

Supposedly some frames built by Silvano Billato had "SILVANO" stamped in the BB shell or so the story goes....

You know you can contact Billato and ask about the frame. I emailed them last week about my Giordana they built and got a response back quickly from Roberto. It was nice getting some insight on the bike from the maker. In my case he clearly stated that Gita Bikes (the importer) did the paint on it. He confirmed they made the bike and told me to send him the serial number off the BB for more info. Just waiting to hear back. And Nelson at Gita Bikes has been a wealth of information in my case. This Superleggero was made by Billato from Excell Podium steel.
I've also got another Billato built Giordana Antares made with Cromor steel. It rides really nice although it weighs about 4 lbs more than the Superleggero.
I'm still working on this one. Now that all the other projects are done it's time to get back to putting the decals on this.
So, like I mentioned above. Why not contact Billato and see what they can tell you. ?
And sweet bike, by the way. I so want one but already have more bikes than I logically need. Not that it should matter in the n+1 equation, LOL.

Thanks for all the great info. This hobby is getting better by the minute! Love the link/story from "verktyg" and those Giordana's are sweet. Looks like top notch resto work on both. I'll reach out to Billato with my serial# and see what they have to say. I bet they are getting a kick out of the inquiries after all these years.
Next big question I have to answer is which way to go with the parts build? I'm torn on using modern vs full period correct Campy C Record. Leaning towards modern SRAM Red 22. Planning to log miles on it on a regular basis. No doubt a "wall hanger" period correct Record C build is around the corner either way.

The downside was when it was built and saw the weight. Still under 19lbs. Sort of made me wish I had got with a carbon fork, carbon groupset, and light wheels. I get it would easily be in the 17 lb range then. Still I love, love, love how it now looks. I've got silver Raleigh RSP pedals on it that are Look Keo compatible and a Fizik Kurve saddle that is white with a black edge. That mirrors up well with the white bar tape/black hoods.
Good luck with your decision. I think that's a frame I had my eye on at Ebay also...

Wow! The idea of getting it in the 17 lb range is very compelling. Never having done the weight math, I had no idea 17 would be attainable. That pretty much makes up my mind on SRAM Red 22. I welcome thoughts on how to solve the fork/headset riddle? Carbon 1" threadless painted to match or have the original sleeved and converted to 1" threadless? Maybe get both but keep the original threaded and on the shelf?
I was having the same conflict when building up the Superleggero. I wanted to keep it classic looking but "modern functioning" since I ride all my bikes. I finally decided on a Campagnolo 11 speed Athena groupset in silver. Had to piece it together and throw in some Record and Cinelli parts but it came out looking good.

My LeMond arrived today. Everything looks good. A bit bummed it's not one of the TSX/SLX versions as I had hoped but would not have changed my decision either way.
Rear spacing was a bit of surprise. Must have been cold set at some point.
Serial #350001 . I'll reach out to Bilato Brothers to see If they can further I.D. the tube set.
Decided on PPG's Deltron 2000 Base coat / Clear.
Off to the soda blaster!
