L'Eroica bike

I'm getting ready to sell my mid1970's Masi Gran Criterium and I need to replace the rims before I sell it.

Looking for some advice on whether I should lace clinchers or tubulars . . This is a perfect bike for Eroica rides.

Opinions and input welcome. What do most riders seem to want for these vintage events? I used to ride tubulars but now I ride clinchers.

I rode sew-ups for 30 years...Changed to clinchers about 5 years ago....Nothing beats the suppleness of tubulars, but clinchers are so much more economical...I'd go with clinchers(Unless you have so many wheelsets that you can use the sew-ups only for special events). BTW, the Masi GC is just about my all time favorite bike...I've always loved them!

Are the original rims damaged? I've done l'Eroica Italy on tubulars and was fortunate with no punctures. Next time I am planning to use clinchers. Mid 70s bike is perfect for early low profile Mavics Module E or 3.

I happily rode tubulars in Los Angeles through the 1970s, then switched to clinchers after moving to north coastal San Diego County and discovering Russian thistle goathead thorns.

Gotta be tubular for a 70s Masi GC.

Tubulars are authentic and the performance can be superlative. However, clinchers are great performers and are far more practical.

These Vittoria 700x25 Vittoria Corsa SC tanwall clinchers checks all the boxes;

The Compass clincher tires are also great performers and also look completely authentic;

Here is a really nice set of old-school tubulars if you're interested. The seller seemed like a nice guy, so he might ship, or I could help facilitate.

I rode sewups from the early 80's up to the mid 90's when I changed over to clinchers. Sometime I'll have to try the old sewups again, now that there are much better sealants available.

I would outfit it with tubulars. Martanos if you can find a set priced right. Otherwise, go with Nisi or Fiamme

On a bike for sale, I'd go clincher. A lot of people would pass on a tubular equipped bike (or complain that they need to buy a set of wheels) but I don't think people would pass due to clinchers.

Here you go. Just what you need!

Unless you know somebody who wants to buy it specifically with tubulars, I'd say clinchers. I gave tubulars one more chance on my last vintage build, and rode on Vittoria Rallys for a season. Too many flats, too expensive even for those cheap tires, and I couldn't tell the difference from a good clincher. If somebody GAVE me a Masi with tubulars on it, I'd still think hard about replacing the wheels with clinchers. But I'd ride it first for nostalgia's sake.

If one had a small business of building and selling vintage bikes, then one might just have multiple wheel sets, and offer a customer a choice of sewups vs clinchers.

If one can find them, a quality used pair of tubular wheels may be as cheap if not cheaper than the corresponding clinchers, especially if the clinchers are made with new parts.
